Having you, with the competences and skills already in place de-risked the project and likely contributed to the grant success, in particular if it’s complex and requires niche expertise. So cutting you off the game would change substantially what MRC approved for funding and could be trouble.

It is probably a miscommunication between HR and the PI, in situations like this there is usually an internal call, with the job advertised only internally so that the due process is respected from an HR point of view.

If you are named researcher co-lead you can ask MRC & your HR for help. Your PI would need to justify to MRC why you were excluded from the project and ask for permission for the changes. You shouldn’t need an open adv for the job as much as your PI will not apply to get the FTE that is budgeted.
