#portfolioday Hi, I'm Aleksis, a Finnish-Chinese Illustrator + comics artist, I do anything that catches my fancy, which in this case are historical+fantasy art and 90s anime-inspired art and characters.

My character Moumou in the summer against background somewhat inspired by 80s-90s summer pop album art. Parody of a Judy Toyota Sakura Wars promo art. Mock poster for the movie "Legend of Eight Immortals" My character Moumou in various 90s sitcom fashions.

1 horror movie every day of October:

8-INCANTATION, Kevin Ko (2022)

This happened to be drawn during a kite festival (think it was in Weifang), but unfortunately didn't finish it before it ended.

I forgot her silk sleeves here but decided to keep it like this.

Yeah they're basically the best ones not only overall but also just by default hahaha

The 90s one had the advantage of actually having the Janssons involved in the production & overlooking scripts(+ the Alfred J Kwak producer), so the game was unfortunately never gonna be in any potential follow-ups' favour.

I mean, there's really only the Polish stop-motion one and the 1990 one (minus the sequel series) that are the only serious contenders for that title.
The rest are either one-offs or too obscure & region exclusive, like Nobody outside of Japanese boomers can speak for the 60s-70s ones

I watched I think the entire first season and more just because for a while I thought it was a Finnish production (which is shockingly rare) & thought y'know I gotta take one for the team, but then I looked it up & turns out it had 0 Finnish writers or directors so that was the end of that goodwill

Relatedly to my issues with the anglophonic Moomin internet fanbase: I also learned apparently people really likes the 2019 UK Moomins adaptation a lot.

Like wow you really out there celebrating Mid, huh

The man truly was just making Modern Comics, he figured out where things were gonna go & started early.

I could post a lot about the different characters & scenarios, how this feels like the nexus-point of so many humanist scifi of the time, how it feels like a predecessor to even very recent works like Heavenly Delusion or Fire Punch...

But instead I'll make the wise decision:

This comic really exemplifies how Ishinomori, at his peak, I find to be one of those creators whose storytelling sensibilities, pacing and conveyance just is kind of timeless & intuitive. You don't need to make as much of mental adjustment, as this could almsot be made 10-20 years ahead of its time

Since I haven't seen anyone brought it up yet, Ishinomori's Ryu's Road manga is phenomenal. It's from 1969 & doesn't feel its age at all.
I feel embarrassed as a fan to have taken so long to finish this, 'cause this feels like an unshakable cornerstone work & thesis statement.

(this will never stop being funny in retrospect.

Apparently the man's kids, who wanted him to show up in SW, didn't even like Rogue One lmao)

😭 i think it's kind of like... wow, look, a queer woman made groundbreaking and singular art that continues to touch every new generation. now let's flatten it down to stuff we learned on tumblr

I basically dgaf about shipping & other fandom things but this is the one time it just feels off 'cause I'm actually not sure (or trust) that other people know.
The whole internet-based anglophone Moomin fandom is such an odd vibe in a way I can't explain, even in relation to other equivalent stuff
sarracenian.bsky.social
just saying, when you look at this Very Obvious Point of Comparison for Sugar's Moomin news, that's also based on famous real life parallels, yet instead people just post about what is tbh a fandom-brained shipping thing its like... What's going on? Nothing wrong with shipping but did people forget?
Tiuhti and Viuhti holding a large red gemstone
sarracenian.bsky.social
At the risk of starting something, but since its trending:

So... Do (anglophonic) people know that the LGBT themes of Moomin is about many things in the text, such as most explicitly Tiuhti & Viuhti, not just Snufkin & Moomintroll, which is mainly just a popular ship?
Like there's more going on?

Swedish activist Greta Thunberg raised her fist as she and about 160 other Global Sumud Flotilla participants arrived in Greece to roaring cheers. Crowds welcomed them after their release from illegal Israeli detention.

Greta later addressed supporters — her remarks are below.

The worst are parts of TV Tropes where it actually gives you less info & context about works of fiction than their wikipedia page.

Like wtf is the use of a page for something like Orlando Furioso, if all it serves is to list shit like "has a What the Hell Hero Moment" & "Ur-Example of hippogriff"

Rebecca Sugar (Steven Universe) to direct a "Moomins" animated feature film.

sarracenian.bsky.social
... OK, so I'd usually have grumblings about how there's yet another new Moomins project that does not employ any Finnish creatives on the helm, but Rebecca Sugar is such a wild grab that it does mitigate those grumblings a lot

Its fine to have a unique ranking/category system & explain it, it's a whole other thing for it to last 20-30min total, with then each category rules detailed so thoroughly that the video barely has time to talk about all the episodes, before even getting to the question of how the eps actually are
sarracenian.bsky.social
Oh man you don't want to read when its not just extremely dry, that's when it quickly devolves into becoming twee as shit
