It is Noah and Maarten who will ultimately confirm whether we found the remains of an Irish man of Cambro-Norman origins and whether there is a match with any living Sarsfield.

As part of our project, Noah has had the key task of extracting and analysing DNA from teeth collected on the human remains found on the site in Huy. His detailed scientific reports on the origins of those remains are crucial to the project.

Noah Gaens’s PhD project focuses on medieval demography and urbanisation in Flanders through a fusion of archaeo-historical perspectives and ancient genome analyses.

Of direct interest to the Sarsfield Homecoming Project, Maarten also recently published a breakthrough study on the frequency of occurrences of misattributed paternity in genealogical genetic research. Maarten joined our team in 2024 along with his PhD student Noah Gaens.

Once again, under the supervision of Garry Jackson and the Garryowen residents, local children stepped up and cleaned the area surrounding the pedestal of the Patrick Sarsfield statue ahead of this year’s Limerick Wild Geese Festival. A heartwarming display of community spirit! Well done all! 1/2
