The real question should be why those docs were distributed on paper, not as encrypted files through a secured network. I mean, it's 2025 ...

As a happy long-term Linux user it always amazes me how many people seem to be just fine with Microsoft forcing access to their computers.

Microsoft is plugging more holes that let you use Windows 11 without an online account. Microsoft really doesn’t want you creating a local account on Windows 11. Full details on the changes 👇 www.theverge.com/news/793579/...

Indeed, there are lots of Zoom featured many (including me) have never heard of.

What disturbs me most is how few people are aware of / use Zoom's end-to-end encryption. Holding committee meetings discussing money, exams, tenure reviews etc. without basic security is a bold choice.

I think a lot of people don't know this Zoom feature exists: under "React" there's a "Be Right Back" button that mutes your audio, turns off your camera, and puts a label on your square. And then when you come back you just click the "Back" button.

Gentle reminder: if you have my phone number / messenger ID and something urgent comes up, just call me (secure VoIP preferred). Sending multiple identical emails per day is not helping. 📱

Was just thinking exactly the same thing – on 2013 Oct 1, I was at a conference in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and getting worried about my return flights 🙃

The most puzzling fact is that – apparently – there is no physically separate backup server farm. Such kind of incident was bound to happen.

A fire at a government data center in Daejeon on Friday paralyzed hundreds of state-run digital services, exposing weak disaster preparedness and sparking fears of a nationwide disruption of postal services ahead of the weeklong Chuseok harvest holiday.

Cold war West Germans had Gudrun Pausewang's "The last children of Schewenborn". Written for young readers, highly traumatizing, but nevertheless I very much recommend it.

Nice result by Farhad Yusef-Zadeh et al. Although "surprising" is a strong word, given that we have known most of this (flares vs. quiescent state, flares every few hours, orbiting hotspot) for about 20 years.

Webb reveals a surprising light show from Sagittarius A*, our galaxy's supermassive black hole, with 5-6 major flares daily and ongoing fluctuations in its accretion disk.
