While scouting for a spot to trap wintering black kites, we found them roosting in a date palm plantation near a large compost facility. The trees were too tall for trapping, but seeing thousands of birds arriving at their roost at dusk was simply magical.

Over the past 7 years, we've tracked 120+ cranes migrating from Russia to the Middle East, crossing either the Black Sea or the Caucasus. This year, one crane switched routes halfway - proof that tagged animals never stop surprising us! 🐦 Data collected with Ran Nathan's Movement Ecology Lab."
