happy this was a false alarm. man said he’d shot his wife, more shots heard on call (suspected he’d shot a son, apparently), and he’d shoot law enforcement when they arrived. maybe swatting 🤷🏻‍♀️ who knows

WSAZ We had a number of calls and inquiries to the newsroom yesterday asking why we didn't get video of the Huntington High student demonstration over ICE. The school and/or school board made the decision to allow students to peacefully voice their opinions... but to close the campus to outsiders, including local news outlets. Some students personally shared the pictures attached. They told me there were roughly 350 students involved, and that the demonstration was indeed peaceful. You mentioned training. My sense is that there are some pretty universal rules around policing. The No. 1 is you don't place yourself in the path of the vehicle. That's like Traffic Stop 101. You don't do that. So in your mind, that's a flag for the ICE agent who ended up shooting Renee Good. Absolutely. And then the other flag is, what exactly is the mission here? Because if this person isn't the target of a preplanned enforcement action, then what are we doing? Are we trying to de-escalate and resolve the situation? What exactly is the goal? I want to ask you about the driver's decision-making at this moment, and her refusal to get out of the car even after ICE agents demanded that she get out of the car. She appears to disobey spoken orders from these officers. As somebody who thinks about this stuff, was she in the wrong? I can only speak to conducting the tratfic stop from my perspective as a police officer. What is our policy, what is our training? No. 1, you approach the driver, you introduce yourself by rank, by name, by what agency you work for, and you tell the person why they're being stopped. You do these sorts of things to try to ensure a level of professionalism, and to try to de-escalate. If the person asks you a question that's reasonable, you respond to it reasonably. That is the expectation. And did the ICE agent do any of that? I didn't see any of that. It just seems like there's confusion, and it's not clear to me whether the officers in the video were working together and understood what each other was trying to accomplish. Do you feel that this would have ended differently had this been handled entirely by the M.P.D., not ICE? No question. What happens next in Minneapolis? Because in the wake of this shooting and these protests, your governor has dispatched the National Guard — at the same time the president is dispatching more federal agents. Is that just going to magnify all the challenges that we have been talking about here? I had asked the mayor to have the National Guard on standby as this was initially unfolding because it was so unpredictable. Going forward, it's my understanding that there is additional federal law enforcement being added to conduct more of these operations. That is concerning. How do you think you get back to a simpler time in your policing? And in your mind, do all these federal agents need to leave the city for you to do that? I think everybody wants to get back to some sense of normalcy, and I think that does involve some level of returning to some basic things that we accepted as normal. You know, that obviously isn't, federal law enforcement stops enforcing federal law. That's not the answer. But it does have to do with having an honest conversation about reality. We've had many instances of people being stopped, family members of police officers being stopped that are American citizens. And they're not stopping family members of folks who are Norwegian or Irish. That's not happening.

I don't agree with people who say that having children is what gives life reaning-my life had meaning and purpose before. But I do think my daughter has already challenged me to remain hopeful on her behalf, and to take action to better myself and my community to create a softer landing for her when she's here.

Famously, Germany's first and last shots of the First World War were fired in Africa. From its beginning to its end this war was a global event which changed lives, but also borders, on all continents. One of the most significant changes was the collapse and demise of Germany as a Weltmacht: Germany entered the war as a global power, with colonies in Africa, Asia, and the Pacific, but left as the first European state to lose all its overseas possessions. In the three decades prior to the First World War, Germany had taken possession of four colonies in Africa (the Cameroons, Togoland, Southwest Africa and German East Africa), as well as scattered islands in the Pacific and the concession Kiautschou (Tsingtao) in Northern China. While these colonies never resembled the large, connected possessions of its imperial rivals, France and Britain, they were nonetheless important cornerstones for Germany's ambitious Weltpolitik and fuelled the imagination of many middle-class Germans. Hence it not surprising that Germany's war aims from 1914 included a consolidated and expanded colonial empire in Africa - a Mittelafrika mirroring a German-dominated Mitteleuropa after a victorious war. Not only did these sweeping imperial plans never materialise, the war marked the end of Germany as a colonial power.

No lie, this is one of the craziest things I’ve ever read. I honestly can’t believe it’s not parody. The more I read, the more my jaw dropped.
If you become just a supplier of information, you go out of business pretty quickly. The value, as most tech companies have realized, is in that last-mile relationship with the user. That's why I keep thinking that news organizations have to bond with their audiences. If you don't know what your audience wants, then you're just a purveyor of straight-up facts. If you don't have a relationship with your customer, that's a real problem.
