Me and @sazyrock.bsky.social had an incredible visit at Sanctuary Mandela, the former home of Nelson Mandela & which has now been turned into a hotel and restaurant. The current chef was Mandela’s personal chef and still serves dishes he loved. This was his bench that he loved to sit on. Incredible

One of my favorite shots I took on a past visit to Erg Chebbi in #Morocco.

I love the sand dunes and the camel caravan.

Thinking back to that time we visited in winter and this normally crowded spot was empty. I loved it.

If you want to try fine dining in Istanbul, Neolokal was also good. For Baklava, locals and tourists alike like the Hafiz chain. But if you can go outside of Istanbul, I think the cities of Gaziantep and Sanliurfa have some of the best food. In Istanbul, you’ll even see “Gaziantep style” whatever.
@sazyrock.bsky.social - Any other thoughts?
And Simon, I still think you could get at least one podcast out of the Society for Creative Anachronism’s West Coast Culinary Symposium!

I’m not sure what’s on the popular guides but @sazyrock.bsky.social & I enjoyed Cag kebap at Sehzade. I enjoy the wet burgers at Taksim Square and the balik ekmek (mackerel sandwich) everywhere. In Kadikoy, check out Cafer Erol for their historical treats and at Ciya Sofrasi for a proper meal.
@simonmajumdar.bsky.social - Do you have any recommendations for a first trip to Istanbul that I won't find in the popular guides?
