Either way, the warranty expired end of August, fault first occurred in June, so should have been covered by the warranty to my simple mind.

I think it is covered for 8 years guaranteed battery performance (ie >80% original capacity) but this was a critical failure, which is only covered by a 5 year hardware warranty.
