landscape architecture and ecology, bikes and bikepacking, urbanism, little bluestem. philly transplant.
i’d consult with an ecologist. grasslands can sequester huge amounts of carbon (assuming that’s what you mean by “ecosystem balancer”). also grasslands aren’t usually able to support forests, they’re grasslands for a reason.

watched this with the sound off and i was expecting some disclaimers about the side effects of the hair loss pills they were advertising

fair enough, dune was a bad example.

an architecture critic who actually went through architecture school would’ve learned the value of critique and not take it so poorly.

also we are america, we do not have some unified aesthetic because we are a complex and evolving culture! i don’t think we want the symbolic, unified aesthetic that communism, modernism, or fascism delivered. we have to be a little more confident than that, which is hard for some.

might hit harder if the loose thesis wasn’t based on false assumptions. the ballroom is one man’s vanity project, not some expression of a unified right wing. they are not unified! the whole essay is just weak and uncited wrapped up in obtuse academic language.

given the popularity of rail trails in the region, i’m surprised you can’t imagine a future where this connection becomes popular. access to a big flat rural peninsula with nature preserves direct from the dc metro area would be awesome.

athletes? come on man, just say lycra-clad or mamil or something. btw lots of normal people do bike tourism when it’s safe and convenient. and the detour here is colossal if you want to cross the bay without a car.

what’s the story on all the boats bombed in the pacific? that’s not near venezuela or on the way to europe.

also i feel like we’re getting away from the main point, which is that bombing boats in international waters is illegal, even if they’re allegedly carrying drugs.

maybe, but they’re already paying for NIMBYism via freeway infrastructure, for $25 min wage so baristas can make rent, for parcel taxes due to low property tax rates. increased costs don’t change behavior if they’re indirect. and if insurance is pooled the cost per person isn’t as significant.

not always. places like santa cruz county often have cheaper homes inland where the fire risk is higher. true of much of california outside the sf/la metro areas, like paradise. not a reason to subsidize them though.

only a true fan drops the deep cuts like that. everyone knows “goes to 11” before they see the movie. far from the funniest line.

the ending isn’t even ambiguous! bell retires, moss dies, chigurh likely goes on living his life! it’s not satisfying and that’s the point!

people seem to think bikes cost $200. i personally need a $3500 bike because i can afford it and it brings me joy.

i had that t. rex one!

the people developing free open source programs are really doing god’s work. they might be slightly clunky but the adobe or whatever equivalents just keep getting worse especially with all the dumbass ai features.

i finally just got a portable pump that plugs into the 12v outlet. no more stress of searching for a gas station with a functional compressor.

i think the racism very much predates the religion in conservative politics. most of the modern conservative movement has thrown a fit since FDR over expanding the state in ways that help minorities. religion has just helped launder hateful ideas and unify white christians.

you literally started the debate by making a cultural idea into a scientific one.

there’s no universal definition of a vegetable, since it includes leaves, florets, roots, tubers, stems, and, yes, fruits like tomato, eggplant, peppers, green beans, and summer and winter squash. it’s just sort of plant parts prepared in a savory way.
