This #MarDelPlataCanyon seastar, despite all the obvious signs, does not have a big butt. The animal does resemble the famous SpongeBob character, Patrick Star.

It may look as if this little one is practicing their dance moves — slow-slow-quick-quick — but we’re pretty sure fish can’t dance. It's more likely this bellowfish, or Notopogon sp., is taking advantage of snacks in the sediments, stirred up by the ROV's robotic arm during #uruguaysub200.

#uruguaysub200 was our 100th expedition since the Lone Ranger — predecessor to R/Vs Falkor and Falkor (too) — left the Canary Islands on January 11, 2011. With an ocean of discoveries still waiting, we’re ready for the next 100! Enjoy the highlights from Uruguay!

They’re only my scary if you’re a smaller, tastier critter in the Ocean. Very safe fish. Sweet dreams! 🌊

Do you ever feel like somebody's watching you? This goosefish — with a wide, flat head, gaping mouth, and an abundance of patience — belongs to the family Lophiidae, which are ray-finned fishes belonging to the order Lophiiformes, the anglerfishes. #uruguaysub200

Artist-at-Sea Alejandro Balbis is a Uruguayan musician who joined the #uruguaysub200 team. “Seeing the scientists in the lab — they hug, they shout at each other as if they had scored a goal,” he said. “It gives me so much emotion... similar to when one finishes a song.”

The #UruguaySub200 science team observed charismatic animals, chemosynthetic communities & the formation of a beautiful, healthy reef that sent a clear message to the scientists: when disturbed habitats are given time to recover, healthy ecosystems can and do return.

For the #uruguaysub200 scientists hoping to document abundant wildlife in their deep waters, this small coral offers a message on a bottle, telling a larger story about life on the seafloor, 2,341 meters beneath the surface.

When chanchitos fly, it happens 2,340 meters deep in the Ocean! This is a sea pig, or chanchito, if you’re a member of the #Uruguaysub200 science team. Scotoplanes sp. is a genus of deep-sea sea cucumbers of the family Elpidiidae. 🎥ROV SuBastian / Schmidt Ocean Institute

Coral & crustaceans! 🪸🦐 Dr. Brenda Doti Dr. says the larger of these crustaceans is a Valvifera isopod fr the Antarcturidae family. These filter-feeders can't lift sediment particles & must find their next meal suspended in the water column.

"...The length of time in
which she weathers
her watch: a brooding.
Imagine her, perched,
pale and love-long,
in some dark shelf,
knowing she will
never meet what
she has made, and
making anyway..."

A hitchhiker’s guide: Tiny, immobile creatures like barnacles can get a leg-up on competition by hitching a ride into the water current where there’s marine snow aplenty. The vehicle of choice here — Lithodes crab, a genus of king crab found throughout the global ocean. #uruguaysub200

Even in the darkest depths, life finds a way!

During a recent #Uruguaysub200 ROV dive, the team on R/V Falkor (too) located the destroyer ROU-01 Uruguay shipwreck, bustling with deep-sea life at 1,160 meters. Read more: www.instagram.com/reel/DOPJefj...
