The implication of these inquiries was clear: if she had been unemployed, then she was indeed "work shy," and thus deserved everything that happened to her. It's a dehumanizing logic that has no place in Holocaust history or remembrance.

One of the women I write about, for instance, was sent to Ravensbrück and then murdered at Auschwitz because she was "work shy" (among other reasons). When her mother submitted a restitution claim in the 1950s, the bureaucrats handling her case inquired about her daughter's employment status.

Until we elect politicians who acknowledge this and roll back the thicket of laws that have enabled this violence it can and will continue to happen.

What’s happening now is a direct result of decades of executive power creep and militarization enthusiastically cheered by democrats as well as republicans. It’s the war on terror brought home, the violence we as a nation have exercised against foreign populations now turned against our own citizens
