That organism can 'purposefully' rewrite their DNA is undoubtedly a misconception. However, the concept that DNA can change directionally following novel phenotypic variants isn't (i.e. amy1 genes in h. sapiens). Organism rewriting their DNA is a (poor) metaphor for their ability to direct selection
