SCIMPI Subsea Borehole Observatory
@scimpi.bsky.social
SCIMPI is an inexpensive subsea borehole observatory for unconsolidated sediments. Our latest deployment is IODP³-NSF/ECORD Expedition 501: New England Shelf Hydrogeology.

Tell us which sensors YOU would like on a SCIMPI.

Oh this is a cool time lapse. Our Chief Technologist Steve took video this leaving the L/B Robert scientific drill ship (yup, that's it way up above the water!) on the transport vessel the Gaspee. #ScientificOceanDrilling #Expedition501 🌊

Expeditions can be weeks or months long and accommodate crew who are their for a short time to perform their speciality. How does the crew switch out? From the supply ship, which is much smaller than the expedition vessels, so a Billy Pugh basket is loaded with the crew for the transfer. Hang on!

Congratulations to the crew of IODP3 Expedition 501, for successful deployment of one of our SCIMPI borehole observatory systems in the New England Shelf. This time-lapse shows 13 "picks" to get it all down the drill pipe. Next one goes in first week of August...stay tuned!

Time-Lapse: How a SCIMPI Module is assembled. SCIMPI is a subsea borehole observatory system that does more science for less cost than other methods of monitoring subsea hydrogeology. One has just been deployed on IODP Expedition 501: New England Shelf Hydrogeology. @ecord.bsky.social
