for the record, here's where I am now,
second courtyard sketched out, polished off yellow key perch, and the stairs to the yellow door/etc have been outlined.,
putting down the mid/hard mancubus caused a z_malloc, and I knew something was wrong then, but I didn't think it was this bad..,

&: so another limitation of original playstation doom is how it renders midtextures. here's an attempt at a midtex door, where you can see that the effect stays after opening the door. it'll just tile the tex all the way from floor to ceiling, no matter what.
