I'm pleased with how simple the Godot lights were. I thought I'd have to start delving into the baffling world of shaders but they ended up just being greyscale texture nodes that add their brightness to the pixels below.

After recording that demo I patched up movement a bit with a snapping function. The final applied X and Y velocity is snapped to the nearest 0.25, to stop that annoying drift that occurs while trying to stay on a cardinal line.
