Our position paper highlights three priority research areas:
1️⃣ Floret structure — stigma presentation, longevity, and receptivity to airborne pollen
2️⃣ Pollen release dynamics — including anther extrusion and dehiscence
3️⃣ Environmental impacts — heat, drought, irradiation, and humidity effects

Hybrids harness heterosis to boost grain yields — a breeding success story for crops like maize and rice. 🚜 Unfortunately, wheat still lags behind due to the high costs of hybrid seed production. Research that improves cross-pollination in self-fertilising wheat florets is urgently needed
