I observed that firsthand with Robin Williams in the 90's when covering his press appearance for Toys in Chicago. He arrived for a fundraiser for a hospital at an adjoining building and was quiet, polite, shaking hands. On the rope line for Toys? Pure Robin, plain and simple.
