The next match in the tournament was The Sandman vs Jimmy Valiant. After some early offense by Valiant The Sandman was able to take control after action spilled outside the ring. Coming back in Valiant kicked out of 2 DDTs before the Sandman finished him off with a Singapore cane shot to the head.

Early first round action saw Johnny Valiant get a decisive victory over Nikolai Volkoff. Valiant took control of the match early and never let up. The finish came when Valiant hit a devastating swinging neck breaker outside the ring. Valiant will move forward to face the #1 seed Harley Race.
