Day 19 - Dog defense … William Boroughs, Kansas, neighbours …

19 Dog defense I called Burroughs, who had moved away from New York and spent more time in Lawrence, Kansas, and asked if he could tolerate my company for a while. I stayed there for two weeks. Bill lived in a very normal house on a very normal suburban-type street. He knew all his very normal neighbors and they all liked him. In his basement, he had this big tube set up on a stand to more quietly shoot guns through. He had a bunch of cats and I think this was around the time he wrote his short book The Cat Inside, which discusses his relationships with felines and their effect on his spiritual and psychic life. 17 Saved by cats The only ones in the loft were Debbie, Gary, Howie, and myself. In the middle of night, the cats woke Gary and Howie and those guys woke us. The flame had gone out in the boiler and instead of heat, it was pumping whatever sooty oily substance fueled the thing into the building. I was quite dizzy and we all had black around our nostrils from breathing this stuff. We ran around opening windows and sat there freezing while the place aired out. Maybe I was just attracted to this gorgeous girl who was a good singer, and maybe fate had conspired to put me in this spot at that particular moment. I gathered that the Stillettos band was nonpermanent, made up of transitory musicians. 14 Biba I got a couple of small black eye shadows that lasted for years. All their packaging was very severe and cool: shiny black containers with gold writing and deco design elements. 11 Rock and roll moments Kevin’s hair dramatically caught fire with fairly large flames leaping off the back of his head. It took him a minute to realize what was going on. I’ve seen a lot of rock and roll moments but this was up there. He just shook his head until the fire went out and kept playing with smoke pouring off his singed hair. When he came out he looked around at the crowd and said, “I see we meet again,” which I thought was amazing. Later I heard “The Star Spangled Banner” as we were walking around. I don’t know exactly what the logistics were but my friends from Brooklyn had rented a big house on San Pablo Avenue right near to the Bay Bridge. I got back to San Francisco and ran into another friend from the MacDougal Street scene, Spade Steve. Steve was a flamboyant and very likable energetic kid. Someone had given him an old station wagon and he told me he was going to drive back to New York and did I want to come along. 6 International Arrivals Bob Fass was a DJ on WBAI radio. He had a popular sort of underground show called Radio Unnameable. One night he started talking about what a great time he’d recently had at JFK Airport, just grooving around in the International Arrivals Building. The subtext seemed obvious: that he meant he had been totally stoned. 4 Hatbox I played certain tracks over and over. (My neighbors once complained to my parents when I’d spent a day playing “Lolita Ya-Ya” by the Ventures repeatedly.) I had a little blue console record player, one of those things that’s the size of a large hatbox. My mother and me were in the basement of a Woolworth’s department store in the neighborhood. I must have gotten separated and was wandering around in the uncaring aisles. Suddenly two things happened simultaneously. There was a pet section and an escaping parakeet or parrot began screeching furiously, and at that exact moment I rounded a corner and came face-to-face with a plaster mannequin that had half its head creepily caved in.
