1 John 4:9 (NASB): By this the love of God was revealed in us, that God has sent His only Son into the world so that we may live through Him. Over the years, I have found moments in life that remind me of who I am in Christ Jesus. Some of these moments have been in songs that were written and recorded that were not written as worship music. I have found moments in secular music that have connected me to Jesus in unexpected ways. Today’s verse reminded me of a song lyric that I like: “You gave me life/Now show me how to live”. There have been moments in my life where I have said or thought something along the lines of those lyrics. I have found myself in places that I did not know what to do or who to turn to. I have found myself in places that I was desperate for someone to give me some kind of answer. Over the years, I found that there was only One who had the answers. There was only One who was talking to me daily, and that if I would listen, I would hear what was being said to me. Once I was willing to listen to what Jesus was saying to me, I found that there was life in what He was doing and saying. Once I become intentional about my relationship with Jesus, I found home. Today, no matter what your questions are, may you find the answer in Christ Jesus.

Isaiah 9:6 (NASB): For a Child will be born to us, a Son will be given to us; and the government will rest on His shoulders; and His name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace. The phrase “Prince of Peace” is sitting with me this morning. The Hebrew word translated “prince” means “a head person (of any rank or class”. It comes from the word that means “to have dominion”. The word translated “peace” is shalom which means “completeness”. I do not know about you, but I think I tend to underestimate the importance of peace in my life. I think that I get so used to my life being fractured by the competing forces of this world, that I expect the chaos and turmoil to be the norm. But that is not who the LORD our God is. God is not chaos. The LORD does not come into our lives to spread chaos. Chaos is not a part of completeness. Chaos is not a part of God’s love. Chaos brings fracturing and pain. Only the LORD our God brings completeness and love into our lives. The people of Isaiah’s time were promised peace in their time of chaos. That promise of peace and completeness is offered to everyone, every day. Today, we celebrate the One who made that promise of wholeness and love. Today, may we all find the completeness and love that is freely offered to us.

Luke 1:35 (NASB): The angel answered and said to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; for that reason also the holy Child will be called the Son of God.” I said yesterday that Mary engaged the angel with a question. She asked how it was possible to become pregnant if one had never had sex before. If we think about it, the question is a very good and valid one. The thing is that if we look at today’s verse, which is the answer, at an empirical level, it does not make sense. There is nothing in our frame of reference to understand what the power of the Holy Spirit has to do with conceiving humans. From a medical standpoint, it would seem like nonsense. If we would run this story by a medical doctor today, incredulous would be the response. Yet, the story is true. It is story that reminds us that God does show up on our lives, but not in the way we expected. It is a story that reminds us that God keeps promises, but they are on God’s terms and not ours. This story challenges us to have faith in what God is telling us. This story challenges us to have faith that Jesus will come into our lives in ways that we do not understand nor can predict. This story challenges us to have faith to wait on the God’s movement in our lives. Today, may we place our hope and trust in the God who loves us, sees us, and speaks to us.

Luke 1:30-31 (NASB): And the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. And behold, you will conceive in your womb and give birth to a son, and you shall name Him Jesus.” Mary always fascinates me. Here is this young woman going about her day like she always does when a stranger suddenly appears out of nowhere. How she is able to carry on a conversation with the angel is beyond me. I am not sure I could get beyond the being petrified part of the appearance of the angel. Yet, Mary hears the words the angel speaks and has a question. In her fear and surprise, Mary is able to respond. I do not have faith in myself that I could respond with coherency if an angel suddenly appeared. “Do not be afraid.” How are we not afraid when something completely unexpected and unexperienced happens to us? I think that momentary fear is natural for us to have. What takes faith is moving beyond the fear and hearing what God is trying to say to us. What takes faith is actively engaging with God when our instinct is to run and hide. What takes faith is intentionally choosing to believe that Jesus loves us eternally. The gift of the agape love of Jesus is offered to us each day we have breath in our lungs. Today, may we respond to the offer of love and eternity God offers us through Christ Jesus.

Romans 14:5 (NASB): One person values one day over another, another values every day the same. Each person must be fully convinced in his own mind. Paul is in the middle of a discussion that even though people act different from, it does not mean they are any less valuable to God. Paul recognizes that we each have our own ways of doing certain things. These ways are not harmful to us or to others; they just differ from person to person. Paul says that these little differences should not separate us from being in community with each other. What should unite us is the motivation behind what we do. That motivation should be that we do what we do because we are trying to glorify Christ Jesus. That motivation should lead us into deeper relationship with the Holy Spirit. That motivation should lead us to put God first in our lives. We were not created to be robots. We were not created to be clones of each other. We were created to show off the forgiveness, love and mercy of Jesus. We were created to let the power of the Holy Spirit guide us each day. We were created to worship God in love and truth. Today, me we learn to put aside the differences that can separate us and unite with each other in the forgiveness, love and mercy of Jesus.

Psalm 25:8-9 (NASB): The LORD is good and upright; Therefore He instructs sinners in the way. He leads the humble in justice, and He teaches the humble His way. The Hebrew word translated “instructs” means “to flow as water”. The thing that strikes me this morning about the verse is that the LORD our God is still active with us when we have strayed away from the relationship. Even when we have not been intentional about being relationship with God, the LORD is still being active in our lives. The LORD is not standing off and waiting. The LORD is still moving in our lives with intention. We may be actively missing the mark in our faith walk with God, but the LORD is still right there involved in our lives. No matter where we are in our lives and what we have done with them, the LORD our God is still there each day with love and patience. The LORD is still trying to communicate with us. The LORD is still trying to strengthen us. The LORD is always there loving us. Today, are we willing to turn back from what is separating us from God and lean into what the LORD is working in our lives?

Ephesians 5:9 (NASB): …for the fruit of light consists in all goodness, righteousness, and truth… Paul is warning the people that there will be those in our lives who come with empty words with the intent to deceive us. There are those who will come into our lives with words that sound good, but their intent is the opposite of good. Their intent is to get between us and Jesus. Their intent is to get us to separate from our relationship with God. Their intent is to yoke us with their agenda. But the empty words do not lead to goodness, righteousness and truth. The empty words lead to death and destruction. The empty words lead to estrangement from God. It is only when we live in the light of Christ Jesus that we find goodness, righteousness and truth. It is only when we live in the light of Christ Jesus that we find life eternal. It is only when we live in the light of Christ Jesus that we are able to live a life of agape love and bring forgiveness, joy and mercy into our lives and the lives of others. Today, may we learn to be part of the true Light of love and let Jesus shine in and through us.

1 Peter 1:13 (NSAB): Therefore, prepare your minds for action, keep sober in spirit, set your hope completely on the grace to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ. The Greek word translated “prepare” is translated in the KJV as “gird up”. When you dig down into the word, the main root word means “yoke”. The word translated “keep sober” means “to abstain from wine”. It can figuratively mean “be discreet”. When I looked at all this, I realized that our faith in Christ Jesus is both about what we are to do and what we are not to do. There are things that we are to do that keeps us close to Jesus. Things we are to do to stay ready to live out our faith. There are also things that we are to stay away from so that we are ready to live out our faith. There are things that will get in the way of our relationship with Jesus. For each of us, the list of things is different. Each of us relates to Christ Jesus in different ways because we are each called with our own gifts and callings. Something I may need to abstain from can be perfectly okay for someone else. Faith is not a one size fits all thing. Even the faith communities we are part of differ depending on the people in them. What is the same is that we are called to be intentional about our faith and our relationship with Jesus. We are each called to live out of the agape love of Jesus each day. So, today, may we each find the things we need to gird ourselves with to glorify Jesus and avoid the things that hinder the movement of the Holy Spirit.

1 Peter 3:12 (NASB): For the eyes of the LORD are toward the righteous, and His ears attend to their prayer, but the face of the LORD is against evildoers. When I was younger and became a father, I was given some advice from mother. She told me that instead of focusing on giving my kids stuff that I should focus instead of giving them my presence in their lives. She told me that what they needed most in their lives was my attention. They needed to be seen by me. They needed to know that they were heard by me. I can say that I did not always succeed in following the advice I was given. Too many times, I let work dictate my comings and goings. I know there are times I wished I had chosen my wife and kids over working more. But the thing is that we are not perfect, and I am far far away from perfection. There is One who is perfect though. There is One who never fails to give us attention and love. Jesus is there each day for us. Jesus is waiting for us to turn to Him. Jesus is waiting for us to talk to Him. Jesus is waiting for us to love like Him. Unlike people, Jesus will not choose something else over you. Today, may we learn to turn to Jesus to be seen and loved.

Romans 8:14 (NASB): For all who are being led by the Spirit of God, these are sons and daughters of God. As has been said before, we have a choice each day on who or what we are going to follow that day. Are we going to follow the desires and lusts of the flesh? Are we going to follow some human made system of believes? Or are we going to allow the movement of the Holy Spirit guide us? In this section, Paul is pretty clear that there are only two choices: life or death. Life is only found in the Spirit of God; anything outside of the will of God leads to death. I have said it before, and I will say it again, it sounds easier than it is. When we try to set aside the desires and lusts and listen only to the Holy Spirit, it can be unfamiliar and confusing at times. Something I have asked myself numerous times over the years: is that the voice of Jesus or is that my voice trying to disguise itself? I have found that I have been good at hearing my voice and taking it for Jesus. Those things either did not start, or they most definitely failed. It is a lifelong journey with the Jesus and the Holy Spirit in us. The more we listen and obey the true voice of Jesus, the more we learn to hear that voice as His and not ours. The more we listen for Jesus, the more we find Him. Today, may we start to learn how to better to listen for and hear the voice of Jesus in our lives.

Romans 8:11 (NASB): But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you. Some days I wonder how much I discount the fact that the power of the Living God resides in me. I wonder who much I miss each day by trying to rely solely on myself to make it through the day. Paul is reminding us today that the power of God dwells in us through the presence of the Holy Spirit. It seems so easy to say that it is true, but so much more difficult to live out in our lives. I do not know about you, but I was taught to be self-reliant. I was told that to be a man in this world meant that I did things in my own power. I was taught wrong. I was taught things that go against who Jesus wants me to be. I have had to slowly unlearn something over the years. As I have deepened my relationship with Jesus, I have been forced to shed some believes and habits from my life that get in the way of the power of the Holy Spirit living in me. I am still nowhere near who I should be in obeying and trusting the power of the Holy Spirit. I still have a lot more to learn and trust in. But it is an intentional choice that has to be made to surrender to the power of God in our lives. Today, may we make that choice to allow the power of the Holy Spirit to move us in obedience and trust today.

Psalm 33:18 (NASB): Behold, the eye of the LORD is on those who fear Him, on those who wait for his faithfulness. I think I have said before that I am the most patient person until I want something. There are times when I can wait out something with no issues. Yet, there are other times that the waiting can causes me to get anxious. I have slowly, very slowly, over the years learned to wait with more patience than I wanted to wait with. I have very slowly learned that the LORD arrives when needed, and that there is nothing I can do to speed up God’s showing up. The LORD arrives, and I must trust in the timing of God. It is very much easier to type that out then to actually do it. Waiting on the LORD can be extremely difficult depending on the circumstances. Some circumstances seem much more urgent to us than others. It is those urgent ones that test our faith in the love of the LORD our God. The urgent circumstances make us feel like we need to take control when we are not seeing the results we want. Those are the times that we learn if our faith is in ourselves alone, if we truly have faith in God’s timing. The LORD is not ignoring us. The LORD sees us and knows what is going on in our lives. Today, are we willing to trust that the LORD our God does love us and will show up for us in our time of need?

Jeremiah 29:13 (NASB): And you will seek Me and find Me when you search for Me with all your heart. In the midst of being carried off into exile, the people are given a promise by God through Jeremiah. After 70 years, they will be returned to the land for the glory of the LORD’s name. They will be restored to a relationship with God. Even though they have continually broken that relationship time and time again, God will repair the relationship. It will not be repaired because they deserve it; it will be repaired because God loves them and wants the relationship to continue. In that time of restoration, the people will want to seek out God. They will want to fully know who the LORD is. I believe this promise still exists for us today. No matter where we find ourselves with our relationship with God, the LORD is working in our lives in a way that means to repair that relationship. The LORD is constantly calling us back to God. We are continually called to be intentional in seeking out God in our lives. We are continually called to be in relationship with God. Today, may we answer that call of love from the LORD and seek out God with all that we are.

John 10:10 (NASB): The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I came so that they would have life, and have it abundantly. There are so many different voices talking to us each day. We are surrounded by a cacophony of sound. There are all kinds of completing messages coming at us on a daily basis. I found that the older I get the more I am able to filter out the different voices that compete with each other. What has been difficult and taken a long time to figure out is how to not just filter out the noise, but how to not filter out the voice of Jesus in my life. Sometimes the cacophony gets very overwhelming, and you just want to put in the noise canceling headphones and tune it all out. The problem can become that when we do too much filtering, we can filter out the voice of Jesus in our lives. So, we have to find ways to install a selective filter; one that filters out the various thieves in our lives and leaves the Jesus crystal clear. It is not something that is easy to do. It is something that takes intentionality. But we are not left alone to do it. We have the Holy Spirit indwelling in us to help tune out the clutter and focus on Jesus. We have the presence of Jesus with us continually speaking to us. Today, may we allow the power of the Holy Spirit guide our lives so that we can more clearly hear Jesus speaking words of love and mercy into our lives.

Isaiah 12:5 (NASB): Praise the LORD in song, for He has done glorious things; let this be known throughout the earth. I remember years ago when I read a story about a certain group of men. One of the group was asked about what he believed when it came to religion. He gave a bit of a vague answer. Then, he was asked if the men in that group ever talked about religion and what they believed. He said absolutely not. As far as most in the group were concerned, religion was a private matter not to be discussed in public. The more I have read the Bible, and the better I have gotten to know who the LORD our God is, the more I realize that we are supposed to live out loud when it comes to our faith. God did not come into our lives so that we could be polite in certain company. God came into our lives so that we could help change the world through our faith. You cannot change things by remaining quiet. You have to make noise to sing. The word that is used implies strings being hit with fingers. You cannot remain quiet and expect the LORD to be praised. Praise requires intentionally making a public announcement of our faith in the LORD our God. Today, may we not remain quiet about the glory of our God.

1 Peter 3:9 (NASB): …not returning evil for evil or insult for insult, but giving a blessing instead; for you were called for the very purpose that you would inherit a blessing. I used to live in a part of the country where the phrase “bless your heart” was part of the culture. It was not a blessing on the other person in any way. To say that to someone is an insult and shows that you do not think much of them. So, we have to be careful with Peter’s words today. We have been taught something over the years that we were told were blessings to other people, when in fact, maybe they were insults instead. I think we need to intentionally examine what we believe to be blessings to others and see if they truly line up with the words of Christ Jesus. Are the things we believe designed to be truly loving, agape love, sacrificial? Or are they designed to manipulate people into the behaviors that we want from them? Are the things we believe truly showing real compassion and sympathy to others? Are we living in true humility, or are we trying to inflate our importance? Peter is reminding us today that what we say and do has importance. How we approach our relationships to others reveals who we are in Christ Jesus. Today, may we learn to truly bless others with the gifts of forgiveness, love, joy, mercy and peace.

1 Peter 5:8 (NASB): Be of sober spirit, be on the alert. Your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. Monday morning, I went to the gym to reintroduce myself to the equipment. I had been going but then I got a sinus infection and then threw my back out while playing golf. So, I had taken a break from the exercise. I decided I needed to listen to Tool while I did this reintroduction. They have a song about being sober that came up, and today’s verse reminded me of that. Being sober takes work. Being sober takes intentionality. It is so much easier to just not be sober. Not being sober means you can just turn off your brain and run on autopilot. Not being sober means you can just let your desires and lusts run the show. Not being sober means you can just ignore whatever the consequences of your actions are. Being sober means you have to pay attention to the consequences. You have to put effort into what you are doing. There are those who do not want you sober, because you are easier to manipulate. The world will tell you that not being sober is a great thing and will promote the behaviors that drive it. Peter is reminding us today that there is One who loves us and wants better for us. Jesus came with forgiveness, love and mercy. Jesus came so that we would not be alone in our fight to stay sober in the world. The Holy Spirit is there for us to be our guide and strengthen when we are lost and weak. Jesus is calling us continually into being sober and on alert with Him by our side. Today, may we head the calling of Christ Jesus and lean into the power of the indwelling Holy Spirit so that God is magnified.

Psalm 34:13 (NASB): Keep your tongue from evil and your lips from speaking deceit. The Hebrew word translated “keep” means “to guard”. It contains the ideas of protection and obeying. The word translated “deceit” means “fraud”. I do not know about you, but I have been guilty of just saying what comes into my mind. There have times over the years when I have spoken before thinking about it. This is not a good thing. I have said the wrong thing at the wrong time because of this. I have said things that were hurtful because of this. I definitely did not guard my tongue. Today’s verse is a good reminder that we have to not only be intentional with the words that we use all the time, but we also have to be on guard with ourselves on not letting out the wrong words. We have to be on guard to make sure that we are not saying things that do not glorify the LORD our God. We have to be on guard to make sure that we are not using words that would make the Kingdom of God to appear deceitful. We have to on guard to make sure that are words are building up the lives of others and not tearing them down. That is not an easy thing for us to do, but when we remember that we are not alone in this, we can seek out the LORD our God to help strengthen and guard us against the wrong things. We are not alone in this world. The LORD is there to help us willingly. The LORD is there to guide us. The LORD our God is there to love us. Today, may we learn to live in the help that the LORD gives us, so that we can say things that honor and glorify God.

John 17:15 (NASB): I am not asking You to take them out of the world, but to keep them away from the evil one. Many years ago, I had a friend call Christianity a death cult. He believed there was an unhealthy fixation on the afterlife. He also was a stanch atheist. At the time, I, too, was a stanch atheist, so I understood what he was saying. However, even in my unbelief, I knew he was wrong. We had both grown up in a church, if different ones. We both had been taught the same things from the Bible. I never got the impression from what I had been taught that death was more desirable than life. Jesus’ words in today’s verse is a confirmation for me that life here and now is important to God. God has the power to pluck us out of whatever we are going through whenever it suits God’s design. Yet, as Jesus prayed, we are allowed to continue to live here on this earth. Instead of being plucked out of the world, we are surrounded by protection by God through the power of the Holy Spirit. Jesus gives us the love and strength to endure through our struggles. The Holy Spirit gives us the knowledge and wisdom to live in the here and now. If anything, Christianity is supposed to be a celebration of life and love. When fully lived out in the power of the Holy Spirit, we are supposed to be an anti-cult. We are meant to live in forgiveness, love and peace with each other. We are meant to work for justice and bring joy into people’s lives. Today, may we allow Jesus to guide and protect through whatever we are going through, so that God is glorified.

2 Corinthians 10:3 (NASB): For though we walk in the flesh, we do not wage battle according to the flesh… Paul has been accused of being meek when he is personally with the people in Corinth, but when he writes, he is bold. The people are trying to reconcile who Paul actually is. He answers that he is being judged by standards made up in the world. They are not using God’s standards to judge him, but the world’s standards. Today’s verse is a reminder that we do not live according to the world’s standards. We live each day in the faith of Christ Jesus. We live each day by the power of the Holy Spirit. We live each day to glorify God. The world does not have the same agenda that God has. The world does not look at others the way Jesus does. The world cannot give us breath in our lungs each day the way the Holy Spirit does. We are physical beings for now in this world, but we are also children of the Living God living in eternity. Today, may we live and love in the power of Jesus through the indwelling Holy Spirit.

Habakkuk 3:19 (NASB): The LORD God is my strength, and He has made my feet like deer’s feet, and has me walk on my high places. The Hebrew word translated “strength” means “a force”. It comes from the word meaning “to twist or whirl”. If you have ever traveled through an area that has been hit by a hurricane or by a tornado, then you know the power that lies in wind. I have witnessed places completely torn apart by the concentration of wind that moved through them. The word “awe” is appropriate both in the fear it produces and the respect it requires. So, when I think of the LORD our God, I realize that the power and strength that is represented there is vastly greater than any hurricane or tornado. The power that is in the LORD our God is not destructive. The power of God does not wildly plow through communities destroying things in its wake. The power of God is creative, not destructive. The power of LORD is used to bring the Kingdom of God into our lives. The power of the LORD is used to bring glory to God. Some days that power may seem overwhelming to us. Yet, God comes into our lives with love and protection, not destruction. Today, may we learn to allow the power of God transform us into people we were created to be in the Kingdom.

Ephesians 5:1 (NASB): Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children… When Lisa was pregnant with our first born, my mother talked to the two of us one day. She warned us that the words that we use every day would be heard by our new child and would be repeated at some point. Lisa and I sort of brushed her off with a yea whatever and went along our merry way. These words became true one night on a drive home back from my mother-in-law’s house. It happened in a funny way that we still laugh about to this day. What I learned that night was that it is true that children will imitate those that they are around. They will pick up habits, words, and viewpoints. I learned that night that I was not immune to the influence of others, nor was I immune from influencing others. It took me awhile to figure out what the correct influences were to be in my life and the lives of my children. There did come a point that I started to allow Jesus to influence me more than I let the world influence me. This in turn allowed me to influence my children to listen to who God created them to be more than who I or the world around them wanted them to be. You would have to ask the three of them if I did a good job or not. I do know that by allowing Jesus to influence me more than the world, that I have three children that I am extremely proud of and can see the work of Jesus in their lives. Today, may we all imitate Christ Jesus more in our lives, so that we can impact the lives of those around us with forgiveness, love and mercy.

1 Corinthians 3:16 (NASB): Do you not know that you are a temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? Looking into the Greek words here it is obvious that Paul is trying to hammer a point home. The point is that God is inside of you. We were created to be not just in relationship with God, but also for God to live inside of us. We were not created to be standalone people. We were not created to be singular. We were not created to be separate. God created us to be in community not just with other people but also in community with God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit. We were created to be a place that the power of the Living God dwells. We were created to be a home for the agape love of Christ Jesus. We were created to be the hands and feet moved into purpose by the Holy Spirit. The world tries to teach us that our ego needs fulfilled and stroked so that we feel we are the center of things that are happening. But God calls us out of that shell to be more. The Holy Spirit moves in us to be more. Today, may we be more by living in the love and power of Jesus through the movement of the Holy Spirit, so that God is glorified.
