🐌🎉 One year ago this week, the Pyrenean Semi-slug (Semilimax pyrenaicus) was discovered new to Britain — found on Cwmaman Tip, near Aberdare, Rhondda Cynon Taf.

A small species, but a big moment for British wildlife.

29/4/2025 - To be or not to be. You're a microscopic planktonic larva adrift in the ocean, looking for a place to settle. "Audentes fortuna iuvat"? Maybe. But here your chances are slim. Unless fortune intervenes with cuttlefish bone; pumice stone; or, a fragment of hard foam #SmallGoose #Lepas

6 April 2025, north east Sicily. The increasingly uncommon Common stingray, Dasyatis pastinaca. Classified as 'Vulnerable' on the IUCN Red List. Yes, this immature specimen had its spine removed before it was dumped. 'Accidental by-catch'? Maybe that phrase is part of the problem #Dasyatis #stingray

In fading light I see thin patches of dwarf seagrass, un-scythed by weather or goose, the hidden network of anchoring rhizome beneath, waiting for better days. Foraging oystercatchers work the beach; a solitary anemone flowers; and the rare curled cast of a black lug with its brief tidy sculpture.
