Nova Scotia Gardeners: This Sunday, June 22nd, is our 2nd annual Native Plant Sale. We began adding native plants to our gardens to support pollinators and because they are unique and eye-catching for all seasons. Come see our gardens (formal tours at 11am, 1, and 3pm) and take a plant home!

Our last batch of seedlings for this summer are coming up: fast-growing Nasturtiums and Xerochrysum. Our seed-planting schedule for this summer started all the way back in October with native plants needing cold treatments! Soon we will be able to just enjoy the garden! 🪏 🪴 #gardenSky

We’ve had a section of our lavender field that has never thrived because natural springs + heavy clay soil make it too wet for #lavender roots to be happy. Tired of fighting our soil, we ripped out that section of lavender and have planted a #willow #coppice instead!

We are planting this summer's lavender seedlings today! Here are our Lavandula angustifolia 'Krajova' seeds, collected last September. We will have packets of seeds for sale + lavender planting advice for free at Seedy Saturday in New Glasgow on 22 Feb, and at Seedy Sunday in Antigonish on 09 March!

A tomato plant with oblong fruits in various stages of ripeness. The ripe tomatoes are a vibrant orange-red. ‘San Marzano’ tomato is a heritage sauce/paste tomato dating back hundreds of years to Italy. It is a disease-resistant indeterminate variety with enormous vines (recommend 8 foot trellis and frequent sucker pinching) that produces fruit continuously from July until the frost. We pack our freezer with San Marzanos for use in sauces all winter long.

Lobelia siphilitica / great blue lobelia, a lovely herbaceous perennial native to the northeast region of Turtle island. We often find bumblebee bottoms sticking out of the zygomorphic blooms. They are one of the truest blue flowers on our property and have an attractive, tall, mounded habit.

Pearly everlasting (Anaphalis margaritaceae) in front of larkspur (Delphinium sp.). Pearly everlasting is a potent attractor of pollinator insects and a host plant to Vanessa butterflies (the American lady and Painted lady in our region). A member of the aster family (Asteraceae), pearly everlasting has silvery foliage and clusters of white flowers in mid-late summer that resemble paws in bud form and open with papery blooms that do not turn brown when dried for winter bouquets. They are incredibly drought tolerant and will thrive in nutrient deplete, gravelly or sandy soil. We recommend pairing them with drought-tolerant neighbours that have blue or violet blooms (e.g. larkspur, lavender, or Russian sage). The white flowers and silver foliage of pearly everlasting will make your blue flowers pop from a distant gaze. Pearly everlasting spreads vigorously by root, so give them some room and divide regularly in spring or fall. Seeds benefit greatly from a cold treatment for germination, but we have found division to be the easiest method of propagation (as they spread so rapidly that it needs doing anyway).
