Ever wondered why seals don't drown? New groundbreaking research from @smruecophys.bsky.social led by @chrismcknight.bsky.social published in @science.org reveals that, unlike other mammals, seals can sense blood oxygen levels.

Important new analysis of bycatch patterns in UK fisheries by @fayehelenmoyes.bsky.social continuing the legacy of the late Professor Simon Northridge. An unexpected result: 'pinger' use, although decreasing cetacean bycatch, may actually increase seal bycatch

an image showing four panels, each panel is a map of the UK and the ICES divisions around the UK, showing a) how fishing effort, b) dolphin bycatch, c) porpoise bycatch and d) seal bycatch varies across the divisions

As part of my MSc with @seamammalresearch.bsky.social and @uniofstandrews.bsky.social we had the opportunity join HWDT on the Silurian for a couple of days in the Inner Hebrides. Even though the weather didn’t agree with us it was a fun experience. Thank you HWDT!

Minke whales feeding in the Jacques Cartier passage over summer are predominantly pregnant females. From 2007–2015 pregnancy rates remain stable despite fluctuating prey availability, suggesting some resilience to environmental change
