I decided to be a field archaeologist at 5 after visiting the Coppergate excavations. I started digging at 15 but by early 20s realised digging + a family wouldn’t work, so I segued into an academic role where I could at least still train.

I’m still a digger.

Is it okay that women had to leave?

New paper. Recording the female experience of UK archaeology 1990-2010. Anne Teather and I document how an industry EDI agenda evolved in the 1990s and was dismantled, uncovering the ramifications of that for women archaeologists over the next decade.

Generally, ableds only notice ableism when they think noticing will earn them capital, be it monetary or social cred from their abled peers for being a "good person." The second it isn't convenient - the second *we* and our experiences and our needs aren't convenient - they "forget" to notice again.

The reason people are targeting disabled people with prosthetics with the ‘clanker’ epithet on social media is because of ableism—not because of AI hate.
Disabled people get slurs, targeted harassment, epileptics get flashing gifs sent to them; I think it’s interesting how some people suddenly care.

It's oddly soothing to know I'm not the only one who's made myself a project like this. I always seem to run out of steam about halfway through, so I hope you reach a satisfactory endpoint (and update us on how that feels so your fellow less-organized nerds can share in the vicarious joy!).

As the thread says, this is a potential game-changer for AMD and other such conditions. Fingers crossed that further studies go well and it's made *widely* available to those who need it.
It's another Ableds, Do The Right Thing Challenge! You can *do* it this time, boys and girls! Ready.... go!

GOOD NEWS! Researchers have developed a new mRNA vaccine that has been shown to suppress abnormal blood vessel growth in the retina, offering hope to MILLIONS of patients with age-related vision loss. The vaccine triggered strong antibody responses that REDUCED retinal damage by UP TO 85%.

And for 20 years, instead of fixing the problem or admitting there *is* a problem, we get crap like this, with no sense of learning or self-reflection, just "it's the fault of the people we're making the medicine for, that must be it!" I don't even know what to say anymore.

When everyone first started to make dry powder inhalers happen, all the companies doing so were flooded with "why doesn't my inhaler work" calls. The advice we were given was a bored "oh yeah... you need to take a deeper breath." ... while I'm having an asthma attack, we asked? Yes, was the answer.
seanchaibeag.bsky.social
There is a very simple reason why dry powder inhalers don't work as well for MOST people - one has to breathe it in sharper and deeper in order for it to work. Guess what's really hard to do when you can't breathe?... that's right, taking a sharp, controlled, correctly timed, *deep* breath!
seanchaibeag.bsky.social
The thing is, the old CFC inhalers? They worked immediately, first time every time, and saved countless lives. And now they're gone, because the world would rather let asthmatics die than reckon with corporate malfeasance. So yeah... miss me (and my dead friends) with this, please.
seanchaibeag.bsky.social
Oh, and the "dry powder inhalers will save us!" canard has been around since at least 2000, and is a scam. Ask any person with chronic lung issues how they feel about dry powder inhalers, and they'll start telling you about thrush and bronchospasms. Do they work? Yes, for some, sometimes.
seanchaibeag.bsky.social
Gotta love CNN just baldly stating that asthmatics are responsible for the air pollution that makes it harder to breathe, and not, say, corporate pollution or Americans' love affair with cars. Any excuse to make health care worse and blame sick people for it, I guess. 🤷‍♂️

The people who are most vulnerable to the hard-to-breathe air that comes with climate change may inadvertently be adding to the problem, new research finds. https://cnn.it/4pWQMoh

Nobody has Long COVID, but everybody has brain fog, cognitive decline and memory loss. I talk about the overwhelming scientific evidence that COVID damages the brain, and the overwhelming social unwillingness to acknowledge it in my latest:

Joking memes make light of the uncomfortable reality: everyone's got a little of that post-COVID brain damage these days

Fascism occurs twice: first as the tragedy of a Second World War started by men who fought the First and knowingly chose slaughter, then as the farce of an ignorant draft dodger trying to provoke a war against his own people.

Trump: "The problem with Vietnam, we, you know, we stopped fighting to win. We would've won easy. We would've won Afghanistan easy. We would've won every war easy. But we got politically correct. 'Oh, let's take it easy.' We're not politically correct anymore, just so you understand."

This. As someone with cerebral palsy (neuro), RA (rheumatology), and Long Covid, this both makes sense on paper and is an absolutely terrifying prospect. I trust very few neuros and rheumys I know to do this well or in good faith... as evidenced by the fact that my LC has received little attention.

I feel like the 2 specialties that make the most sense to “own” #MECFS are rheumatology and neurology.

But they’re also 2 of the specialties I consistently hear people have terrible experiences with.

There’s a long road ahead.

This same shit is happening again and we need famous artists to rally together and get loud NOW— or middle class people who work behind the scenes like my great-grandfather risk losing everything for producing or working on shows our Orange Leader doesn’t like.

My great-grandfather was a radio producer who served as a sergeant in the U.S. army in WWII running radio programming for our armed forces in a Europe. He got put on Joseph McCarthy’s red scare list for producing Woody Guthrie shows and had to flee to Mexico for 2 years. my family lost everything.

It was one of those weirdly profound moments you didn't expect and can't fully define - some spontaneous connection that happened for a few brief moments, sparked by the right song meeting the right moment for a particular group of humans assembled.

And it's why music exists.

I was sitting in the front row of the DNC in 2008 when City of Blinding Lights started over the PA. I and the delegate beside me started quietly singing along. Slowly, it spread to more of the row - ultimately there were 10-15 of us staring up at the sky belting the lyrics. We never exchanged words.

Me (dryly): Was it?
Him (laughing): Course it is, I'm having a great time!
Me: Still, I think for the delay to be worth it to *them* you might have to pick up the check.
Him: Thank you, now I can tell 'em you said *that* and they'll think we're both incredibly wise.
seanchaibeag.bsky.social
Paul (laughing harder): No no, above and beyond the call of duty!
Me: The only people Geoff's scared to give a ticking off are the women *related* to you.
Paul: YUP! The lot of 'em in this case! They're my babies, they'll wait. I'll tell 'em it was worth it.
seanchaibeag.bsky.social
One I can share:
Paul (to me, of Geoff Baker, his then PR man): Look at 'im. Tappin' that watch.
Geoff: You're *late*!
Paul: Only for *dinner*, they'll wait.
Geoff (wide eyed): If you say so...
Paul: (laughing) I c'n handle 'em!
Geoff: Better you than me! Not taking the flak for THAT!

So if you ever have the pleasure, just be yourself... and let him do most of the talking. The reason I don't give many specific details online is because mostly he wanted to talk about his kids and grandkids, and that was an *incredible* privilege but everyone deserves their privacy, too.
seanchaibeag.bsky.social
He did, too, which in hindsight was even more flattering - that man *read* me from 20 paces and got a twinkle in his eye like "Oh, working class Irish roots, hello, HOW working class Irish though?" and the second he saw I could banter, he literally sat in my lap. 🤣
seanchaibeag.bsky.social
I wish I could have shared it with more people! I wasn't expecting any of it to line up when it did, so I didn't have anyone to share it with but my mom and sister (I'm on the left, younger sis on the right). 24 years ago now and I still think of it regularly... "OMG, Paul BANTERED with me!"😁
seanchaibeag.bsky.social
He was exactly as you think he'd be, and it was brilliant. Best 20 minutes or so of my life to date, honestly, because he was so genuine and lovely. It's become my eternal reminder that some people really are as "good" as you think they are (in the general good faith sense, not as in without-fault!)
