(4/5) Based on my findings, I develop a theory that outlines key interpretative steps state leaders take before escalating a conflict. These steps form routines that complete the decision theory, providing insights into the escalation decisions I examined.

(3/5) For theory building, I identify 7 representative escalation decisions based on an elaborate case selection. I analyse the cases with process tracing, structured & focused by hunches based on prior research results. At the same time, the analysis remains open to the unexpected.

(2/5) Most studies overlook state leaders in interstate conflict escalation. Prospect Theory considers their personality & decision environment, but omits how options are edited. I use a theory-building research design to explain steps involved in editing confrontational options.
