I grow food and pollinator plants from seed in zone 10a.
I usually dread growing cosmos. As much as I love their flowers, it’s like trying to grow wet noodles 😂 but this shot has made the trouble almost worth it ❤️🌱

Told my wife I’m going to “Home Depot” to “pick up” some mulch 😬🌱

Well… 😔 I guess it’s not all success. Here’s my first attempt at growing microgreens. I’m not an expert, but that don’t look good. 🌱
March 30, 2024 at 12:48 AM
Yea, so I just live outside now 🤷🏼‍♂️ not sure how I’m gonna tell my wife, I don’t imagine she’s gonna take it well.

I should put a zoom meeting on her calendar to discuss, I know how busy the inside world can get.

I let a friend of mine plant her Dutch tulips in an empty space in my garden 🌷now all my other flowers have insecurity issues lol

Seriously though, these flowers are almost too beautiful, it’s hard to notice anything else 🌱

Tell me I’m crazy. I had an impulse to fill most of a tray with paper, let it soak, then cover in soil for my microgreens 😬

This way I can use the fancy-pants Happy Frog soil without throwing out a couple bucks with each tray 💵

Also, it’ll give my paper a head start before composting. Thoughts? 🌱

For those of you wondering, “Why do I need to attract pollinators? Why don’t I just buy self-pollinating plants?”

The strawberry in my hand has technically been successfully pollinated, but to achieve the classic heart shape, all the seeds need to be fertilized.

That’s where bees come in 🌱🐝

I know there are many more eye-catching, ornate flowers with vibrant colors and elegant curves… but there’s just something about the strawberry flower that makes me stop and admire it every time.

Maybe because each one looks like a tiny sun ☀️ but whatever it is, it always grabs my attention 🌱 🍓

🥀🪻🌼🌸 My pollinator buffet is now ready for spring!

2 hummingbird plants
2 butterflies
2 bees
3 different heights
6 different colors

Can I get you guys anything else? Maybe some jalapeño poppers for the table? 🌱
March 18, 2024 at 5:27 AM
So I turned an old cornhole set into a grow station, and I remember thinking, “This should be more than enough room for all the 🌱 seedlings I’ll be growing over the next few years…” 👌

Well I didn’t account for myself becoming a compulsive proplifter anytime I see a potential cutting 😂

I know it’s hella naive to say this, but at this point, I feel like I’ve grown every tomato 🍅 San Marzano, the Cherokees, the Rainbows…

And yet, nothing comes close to these two 🏆 B.K. is a vigorous shade/cold-tolerant heirloom with notes of thyme and oregano 🌱 and Sungold needs zero introduction.

Oh, and one more thing about the Calla Lily 🥀 I mean look at this thing! I’ve never seen petals so elegantly chaotic before 😮 it looks fake and expensive at the same time 🌱
March 12, 2024 at 10:21 PM
Could I BE more excited? (R.I.P.) I found every obscure seed I need from a single place. And the artwork 🥹 As a designer, my goodness, just stop it. But also, please keep going.

All-star lineup of microgreens 🌱 tomatoes 🍅 and zucchini 🍆

They don’t pay me btw, just a good, honest U.S. company!

I’ve been using Calla Lily essential oil as the base note for my candle scent, and finally got one! 😍

One of the few flowers that likes being indoor or out, pot or ground, can tolerate 40-110°F, and produces jaw-dropping cut flowers that can stay fresh for 2 months!

Ok so, kabocha likes soil temp >60°F and honeydew likes >65°F…

My soil? 24-hour average of 54.8° with a low of 48° 🥶 let’s see what happens I guess 🤷🏼‍♂️

Humbling reminder that you can’t control nature or predict its conditions with ideal accuracy.

Today is the day 🙌🏼 the seedlings are ready to move out and grow into my Super Sugar Snap wall.

I’ll be using screw eyes and garden twine to construct the trellis they will grow on. Let’s see what 2-3 hours of sun will buy me 🤞🏼

So I finally tried what the cool kids are doing and didn’t bury my seeds, instead I sifted my potting soil to make it soft, then put the seeds on top, and covered in perlite.

Well the results blew me away 😳 these seedlings have only been growing for 8 days!

Two months of nonstop rain 🌧️ then today, I finally found a short window to get (somewhat) caught up. But I did not expect this heavenly view 🌈

Alright friends, I need some inspo. This is my bench for the upcoming season, I could use some help assembling my starting lineup 💪🏼

Some seeds I’m definitely running back this year after a great 2023: Honey Orange honeydew, Lebanese squash, Super Sugar snap peas.

I’ve been avoiding this day 😬 I love this Ethiopian pepper plant so much, had a great first year, and the fruit was perfection.

But now it’s time to reset it in preparation for spring, so this is my first attempt. Soil mix is 50% natural, 25% perlite, 25% peat moss.

I can’t stress enough, stick a thyme plant in the ground and forget it. When it gets 1ft tall, harvest the top half. Wash, dry, peel off the leaves, dehydrate at 105F until crispy.

Easily my favorite herb, packs a perfect Italian punch, and you can’t buy it like this!

If I only had room for one pepper plant, I would grow the Ethiopian Berbere Pepper.

It’s hardy, productive, and the fruit has a perfect medium heat, with a distinct smoky flavor and notes of paprika and cacao. Versatile too, great for sauces, frying, or eating raw.

💡 Why is it important to always have something growing in your soil? Because roots serve as a network for a thriving ecosystem.

This is my winter cover crop, meant to prep the soil for spring. The 2nd image is where my patch of snapdragons didn’t make it last spring 😳
