If this is a typical winter I hate it! I want 2023 winter every year.

Finally, @weatherwest.bsky.social accurately predicted the dry windy conditions leading up the Los Angeles fires at least 24 hours ahead of time. Hurricane modeling and prediction can give similar advanced warnings. From this perspective NOAA and NWS serve critical functions in public safety.

Furthermore, weather is a global issue and accurate forecasting even goes beyond the United States. If anything, we should be investing more money and strengthening our scientific relationships internationally. Whether or not climate change is human induced, it is indeed changing.

It is my understanding that by and large private entities are entirely reliant on NWS data and observations and the value added is in the way that information is presented. I think @opensnow.bsky.social fits that synergistic model well. In other words NOAA is the bedrock of the industry.

Andrew Blum went into great detail on this in his book, “The Weather Machine.” Private sector companies like Accuweather simply repackage the NWS data and charge people for it. The scale of observations required for accurate forecasting is beyond any single private entity.

I’m sorry to bother you Mr. Girdley, but I downloaded your step-by-step guide and all it said was,”Eat Chili’s and buy Brinker International.”???

Science is hard. Kudos to you for owning the mistake. It might be cathartic to read about James Mahaffey and the Georgia Tech Research Team walking back their cold fusion announcement. The experiment was flawed because of a temperature sensitive bias in their neutron detector.

That whole era of cartoons. I’m a grown ass man, but every time I’m in the turn lane with my blinker on and the music off. Tick-tock tick-tock life is like a hurricane, here in Duckburg.
Race cars, lasers, aeroplanes, it’s a duck-blur. Might solve a mystery, or re-write history. Duck tales! Woo-oo!

Dr. Christakis, I just wanted to tell you that I really enjoyed Apollo’s Arrow. I particularly enjoyed when you compared throwing pitchers out of windows during the plague of Justinian to taking hydroxychloroquine. Your voice in public health is more important now than ever.
