@seis-uk.bsky.social has had seismic equipment on every continent through our work with the wider geophysics community. We supply equipment, software, training and expertise to ensure that world leading research can be conducted.
I hope you've enjoyed our #SeismicSaturdays this year, we'll be taking a break over the Christmas period but will be back in the New Year. Happy Holidays!

On Wednesday 3rd December at 23:23:34 (UTC), a M3.2 earthquake occurred in Silverdale, Lancashire (UK). The earthquake was felt in towns and villages within 25 km from the epicentre. The earthquake could also be seen on our Seismometers in SEIS_UK, with clear P and S wave arrivals.

In 2017, 10 of our seismometers were deployed across the Afar region of Ethiopia. A swarm of ~1000 earthquakes occurred along a ~15 km fault system. Subsequent receiver functions showed crustal thinning from ~38 km to 14 km, as a result of continental breakup.

Did you know, we have all the components for a GEODE study, including: 4.5 and 100 Hz geophones, 2x12 channel cables, and a hammer switch and plate.

Northern Borneo is the location of a complex interplay of tectonic events. As part of the nBOSS project, several of our seismometers were deployed in the region between Mar 2018 -Jan 2020.

With a pop, bang, and fizzle, the sound of fireworks can be heard around the UK on #BonfireNight.

The sound of fireworks are also heard by our seismometers in @seis-uk.bsky.social, recording each firework as a short sharp spike in ground motion on the seismogram.

Along the Halloween Crack in Antarctica, a series of ruptures through the ice lead to a series of ice quakes. In 2023, the team at @bas.ac.uk made use of @seis-uk.bsky.social geophones to record the seismic signals from the ice quakes to understand the growing crack.

While our seismometers have been deployed on every continent on Earth, they have also played a role in the deployment of seismometers on Mars. In a Stevenage quarry, our seismometers were used to benchmark those that were launched and deployed on the red planet.

From Oct 2014 to Mar 2015, our seismometers were used in an experiment to assess how seismic data could be used to analyse fluvial processes. The best results occurred where a seismometer was coupled with bedrock, showing some correlation with fluvial processes.

This week saw the return our seismometers from the glaciers of Iceland after 5 months of deployment.
The sensors recorded earthquakes around the Bárðarbunga caldera beneath the Vatnajokull glacier, allowing for a greater understanding of the volcano's interior.

Between June 2013 and Sep 2014, 20 seismometers were deployed across Scandinavia for the SCANLIPS 3D experiment. The results show changes in the crustal depths across northern Scandinavia, denoting changes between magmatic underplating to post-orogenic collapse.

At 9 AM on a Saturday, hundreds of runners gather to Leicester Victoria Park for #parkrun.

The start kicks off a seismic swarm of runners, releasing energy with every step. This creates a peak in ground displacement in our seismometers every Saturday morning.

In July 2021, the Askja caldera in Iceland began to reinflate, with > 85 cm of uplift and a surge in seismicity. Between September 2021 and September 2023, 12 seismometers were deployed to Iceland to monitor local seismicity and model the physical properties.

In 2017, our seismometers were deployed to the North Island of New Zealand for an active and passive source imaging experiment.

This was aimed at understanding the location and progression of relatively shallow slow-slip seismic events.

In 2023, Victoria Park, Leicester hosted BBC Radio 2 in The Park, with several artist taking to the stage, including @kylieminogue.music-social.com.

The dancing of the crowd to Kylie's music was detected by our seismometers, with the crowd's movement matching the songs BPM.

Between March 2020 and March 2022, 7 of our 6TD seismometers were sent to North Yorkshire to monitor landslide processes.

The seismometers were utilised to investigate hydrologically controlled landslides and their microseismic responses.

Between May 2022 and Dec 2023, 35 of our seismometers were deployed across Zambia as part of the CuBES project.

Utilising shear-wave splitting, researchers were able to constrain lithospheric features from the Precambrian to Phanerozoic across the region.

Last Saturday saw the return of the Fake Festival to Leicester Victoria Park.

A full day of tribute bands went to the stage, with the sound and movement of the bands and the crowds being picked up on our seismometers

In September 2023, a rockslide into a fjord in eastern Greenland generated a tsunami. The oscillation of the tsunami wave in the fjord created a resonant standing wave called a seiche. This seiche caused a 10.88 mHz seismic signal that rang for 9 days.

Last night at 23:24:50 (UTC time), a M8.8 #earthquake rocked the Kamchatka Peninsula in eastern Russia. The event was detected by seismometers in our test bays, taking only 12 minutes to arrive.

This event was the largest since the 2011 M9.1 earthquake in NE Japan.

In 2010, an increase in seismic activity at the Northern Volcanic Zone in Iceland led to a deployment of our seismometers. The seismicity was located in the mid/lower crust, which was attributed to the flow of dyke intrusions as they moved through the Earth.

Last year saw the return of Kasabian to Victoria Park, Leicester for their Summer Solstice II tour.

During the gig, our seismometers picked up the movement of the band and crowd, distinguishing the songs in the set list by their BPM.

In 2019, researchers used our seismometers to monitor elephants on the Kenyan savanna. The researchers managed to distinguish elephants in the seismic data in both their locomotive behaviour and their rumbling calls.

In 2013, researchers using our seismometers at the Donna Nook (UK) seal colony observed that the body slap intimidation between bull seals produced substrate vibrations. These vibrations provided a good indicator of bull seal length.
