Organoider, miniatyrorgan som odlas från mänskliga stamceller, är mycket användbara i forskning. I framtiden kommer de ha en stor betydelse även inom transplantationsvården.

“we used mini organs, specifically mini-intestines, and infected them with a dangerous bacterium called Shigella” says @mldm.bsky.social

@sellinlab.bsky.social‬ (SciLifeLab & @uu.se) shows that cultured mini-organs can uncover how pathogens cause disease

Our latest work combines human gut epithelial #organoid culture with experimental #Shigella #infections, transposon mutagenesis, and statistical modeling. This has led to the mapping of the comprehensive geneset that drives Shigella epithelial colonization.

I enjoyed this NPR story but thought it was a bit unclear regarding the origin of the name "Salmonella" and who should be credited with its discovery.

The study highlights how just a handful of differing virulence factors active at the epithelial surface invasion step (Salmonella) vs at the intraepithelial expansion step (Shigella) to a large extent can explain the contrasting epithelial infection cycles of these related bacteria.
