Even the mom-and-pop video stores some people are extolling generally sucked.

The genuinely coolest thing about old video stores, further back in the 80s, was completely incidental—that genre b-movies had some of the coolest theatrical posters, which got re-used as video box art.
The poster for the movie Def-Con 4, which shows a skeleton in a decayed-looking space suit (of a vaguely armored design probably meant to be near-futuristic in 1985) buried up to its chest in the sands of a desert. A ruined-looking city can be seen on the horizon, and an image of some kind of damaged satellite with a half-empty rack of missiles hovers in the middle distance, as if it's something actually somewhere else (say, orbit), but relevant to the scene.

After roughly a century of people referring to metaphorical gremlins in machinery and electronics, we've finally managed to build *actual* gremlins in the form of AI tools for managing computers and production environments...

Finally remembering to update my pfp. The old one was a genAI image I'd retouched, from back when the tech was a weird curiosity and not something trying to be jammed into everything.

What's really annoying about the big AI push is that I used to be able to ask Google questions in reasonably plain English and get results that included the answers.

Now I get AI making shit up.
