I will never forgive the inane executive producer culture that assumed kids need "A kid character—y'know, to identify with!" in order to make a show/movie/book complete.

That works! As a little kid, I always called them "Benjies" or (later) "Scruffies." I think "Tramp" automatically makes me think of a particular pointy-eared stray who hung out with a Lady, but that's not too far off. 😉
