SNAP helps keep people fed. Trump’s budget would cut food support for 45,000 Minnesotans and raise local taxes to feed fewer people.

These cuts won't fix anything, they’ll just make hunger worse for working families, seniors, and kids across Minnesota. #mnleg #foodinsecurity #hungerawareness
Federal Cuts to Food Support. The Trump budget will cut SNAP benefits to 45,000 Minnesotans, while increasing state and county costs by hundreds of millions, meaning increased taxes to feed fewer people. Older adults and families with teenagers will be hit hardest by these cuts Federal Cuts to Food Support: Food bank visits in Minnesota hit 9 million in 2024, the fourth-straight record-breaking year. At about $5 a day, SNAP benefits don't pay the grocer bill, they are a supplement to help working people make ends meet. Federal Cuts to Food Support: People receiving SNAP live in every community across the state. In some Greater MN counties, SNAP usage is above 10% of the population. At grocery stores in remote locations or food deserts, SNAP can account for more than 10 percent of all sales. The vast majority of SNAP recipients are already working, often multiple jobs, and work requirements have no effect on local employment rates.

Trump just canceled $464M in clean energy grants for Minnesota, threatening key transmission projects and driving up costs for northern Minnesota families.

Sen. Hauschild is calling Rep. Stauber to demand these partisan cuts be reversed. Minnesotans shouldn’t pay the price for Washington’s games.
Star Tribune headline: Trump administration cancels nearly half-billion-dollar grant to Minnesota for power lines serving seven states.

“Using grant funding as punishment against states that did not vote for you is an affront to democratic values. It sends a chilling message that infrastructure, clean energy, and reliable power are secondary to political retribution.” - Senator Grant Hauschild

Minnesotans and Americans deserve (among other things):
▪️Healthcare
▪️Functioning government

It is a shame that Republicans, with full control of the federal government, could deliver neither.

62,000 Minnesotans are expected to lose private coverage in 2026 because prices are skyrocketing thanks to the Republican big budget bill. That’s on top of 140,000 losing Medicaid.

Healthcare should be affordable, not a luxury.

14 years after Sen. Vega’s breakthrough, Edwina Garcia made history as the first Latina elected to the Legislature in 1991. Representing Richfield, she focused on education, health care, and empowering communities, and expanded representation for Latinas in public service.

In 1977, Conrado Vega became the first Latino elected to the Minnesota Legislature. A son of Mexican immigrants, Vega represented South St. Paul and worked to ensure that Latino voices were included in state decision-making. (1/2)

The Senate DFL is facing this problem head on and filling gaps at the state level, but Minnesotans need a federal government that won’t make it even harder to put food on the table.

Cuts to food banks and nutrition programs by the Trump administration and congressional Republicans are turning what was already a crisis into a full blown emergency.

What’s more, they’re hiding the impact of their cuts by ending government reports on hunger itself.

Today the Senate Select Committee on Federal Impacts toured Channel One Regional Food Bank and met with local advocates and experts on food insecurity.

One in five Minnesota households are food insecure and growing demand has stretched our regional networks beyond their limits.

Minnesotans deserve real solutions to keep our kids and communities safe.

Passing gun violence prevention legislation requires Republican votes, and Minnesotans need Republicans to commit to serious solutions.
Statement on Gun Violence Prevention.
Minnesotans clearly understand that the work to keep our children and communities safe and the passage of urgently-needed gun violence prevention measures isn’t the responsibility of Democrats alone.
Republican votes are required to pass a bill of any kind. Republican legislators whose districts support gun violence prevention have remained silent.
Their constituents deserve to know where they stand.
This is an important moment for Minnesota.

WOW: The Trump Administration is revoking a $1.9 million mental health grant for Rochester Public Schools, because it doesn’t “reflect the Administration’s priorities and policy preferences.”

Our students need support, not cruel obstacles to getting the help they need.

In the 60s and 70s, MN was home to a strong Chicano Movement, led in part by groups like the Brown Berets. Activists fought for bilingual education, farmworker rights, and against discrimination—laying the foundation for Latino civil rights advocacy. Their work continues to inspire new generations.
