Excellent to see this article in Tes by Alex Quigley on the ‘Five-a-day’ approach to teaching pupils with #SEND, a framework for inclusive practice that should give hope to a profession working incredibly hard to deliver lessons inclusively.

This has been a part of being a teacher for over 20 years. We know that this benefits the whole class. Does that mean good teachers are phenomenally skilled? YES! Does it mean becoming phenomenal skilled takes time? ALWAYS! Does skill development need support? CERTAINLY!

Maintaining positivity around the phrase ‘every teacher being a teacher of SEND’ might be tricky, but if feels key to achieving true, and joyous, whole-school ownership of pupils with SEND.

Fascinating study, this. Raising teacher awareness of published research evidence is clearly vital alongside (not instead of) supporting teachers to themselves be reflective practitioners themselves. This paragraph sums up my own feelings about the dangers of an over-reliance on discovery learning.

New data out today shows 5.3% EHCP and 14.2% SEN Support.

There are good news stories behind this increase - better identification in schools, improvements in medical science, greater awareness of neurodivergence. That’s not the whole picture, but is an important part of it.

A really interesting evening listening to @jamieoliveroffical.bsky.social , @jonsopel1.bsky.social , Bridget Phillipson and Alex Mahon talking about provision for dyslexic pupils in school. I also got to see a preview of Monday’s Channel 4 documentary #jamiedyslexia, which I can highly recommend.

Great to see these ‘Five-a-day’ resources collated on a new EEF SEND webpage, for ease of use. If you’re a school or college leader looking to drive inclusive teaching practices in your setting, this is an excellent starting point.

Enjoyed reading this from @alexjquigley.bsky.social. Labels can be a useful shortcut for educators (and can be essential for various reasons for pupils and parents), but only when it’s alongside a detailed understanding of the child’s learning strengths and potential barriers.
