Being serious: I think they want absolution for their desire to constantly rag on Trump voters over anything constructive.

Telling a low-income white guy that they need to be happy with their lot in life because some white people are rich is not persuasive & drives them to the right (ie., who happily tell them their grievance is righteous & someone else’s fault).

"A few days" doesn't make sense to me—it's December 14 & we're at the end of the semester. Examinations affected will be picked up in 1 or 2 months. This means all faculty can go home, rather than placing an exorbitant burden on any academic/admin staff who tried to work through it.
