8/9 The biggest takeaway for me from Appleseed was the opening music which is from Richard Burns Rally with its synths emulating modern rallying’s low rev growls and high strung engine sounds. It’s still on the playlist.

7/9 FLCL or fooly cooly is a coming to age short series where a space alien girl and her antics as a vehicle for character milestones maturing, and that vehicle is a Vespa and maybe a baseball bat. Free-form Jazz-like in flow it remains a cult classic.

6/9 The Semitic, Abrahamic, and Christian iconographies were surface level compared to the psychology. The motivations of characters, angels, and organizations and ultra-violence punctuated by normalcy and liquid breathing makes it a classic sci-fi series.

5/9 Gunbuster put Gainax in solid financial footing, Neon Genesis Evangelion printed money and were idolized by almost every anime viewer in the US. It’s a giant robot, kaiju milnerd series that are hooks for what is a coming to age for broken children.

4/9 Gunbuster mecha kaiju series popularized the Gainax Bounce breast physics but for me it was the first sci-fi that had time dilation and other relativistic effects. The final episode showed that black and white can have a greater emotional impact.

3/9 Royal Space Force: Wing of Honneamise with its deep fictional world building is a must view for space fans. It looks at man’s place between science and religion, at their best and worst, and what part of themselves they will bring to the heavens.

2/9 The Daicon IV short film for a science fiction convention was done by university students that helped with direction and funding for what became the Gainax animation studio.

6/6 Liftoff: Micro Drones focus and interesting environments such as the Principality of Sealand sets it apart from many other sims that are not optimized for the smaller scale. Micro drones are an affordable entry to FPV drones so this sim is a recommend.

5/6 TRYP-FPV running on the Unreal Engine 5 easily is the best looking out of the FPV sims I cycle through and the graphics highlight how useful peripheral vision cues can be. Its X-Games-like focus brings something fresh especially for cinematographers.

4/6 Drone Racing League is a great training tool for competitions. While the physics is specific to their formula spec drones with better graphics and a The Last Starfighter-like pilot recruitment drive, it also offers environments for freestylists.
