New episode! 🦴 We sit down with Dr. Brian Villmoare to unpack a new Australopithecus identified from… teeth. Yep—dentition as the smoking gun. Watch here: youtu.be/ex6kMP-wsjI?...

Fire turned night into thinking time. Early Acheulean evidence at Wonderwerk Cave (~1.0 Ma) shows controlled burning—ash + charred bone in situ. Read Berna et al., 2012 (PNAS): www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/... #PaleoPost #HumanOrigins

Have you caught the most recent episode of the #PaleoPostPodcast? We had special guest Dr. Villmoare of the Uni of Nev at Reno!

We discuss the amazing find the team he and his colleagues from ASU led, leading to the discovery of a new Au. species!

Hear the story-

Ah, this is one of the larger territories in the country, but it’s a small country haha. There is a very large province in China that was founded by the Portuguese actually; and to this day the two nations have strong ties!

Anta da Foz do Rio Frio, Mação: Neolithic dolmen (c. 4th–3rd millennium BCE). Granite orthostats framed a chamber and corridor for collective burial and ritual. Partly collapsed, it still anchors the valley. #PaleoPost #HumanOrigins #Megaliths #Portugal #DeepHistory

Archeoaccoustics is a fascinating field I am dabbling in, with some colleagues.

Imagine - it’s not just a simple act of pigment on wall, it’s a whole surreal experience: Cave Art wasn’t just about what we could see!

Ever wonder how ancient artists made those negative handprints on cave walls? Step back tens of thousands of years and see the process unfold — pigment, breath, and human touch combining in one timeless act of expression. Watch history come alive: youtube.com/shorts/_AdfQ...

Recently, a team led by researchers from ASU and the University of Nevada came across some fascinating #fossil #hominin #teeth in Ledi Geraru. They turned out to belong to a new species of Au! Also, these fossils coexisted with an unknown member of #Homo!

Before toys, there were stones and stories. Play isn’t trivial — it’s how imagination and innovation began. Even in deep time, children shaped culture through curiosity.

If you teach, study, or just love deep history, this one’s a masterclass in how fossils become arguments—and how arguments (eventually) become consensus.

Science is a team sport. We dig into collaboration, replication, and the checks that keep bold claims honest—plus what gets Dr. Villmoare excited (and cautious) about naming new species.
sethchagi.bsky.social
Big picture: where does this species sit relative to other australopiths? What does the dentition suggest about diet, ecology, and behavior? And how does it reshape our timeline?
sethchagi.bsky.social
Methods you’ll hear about: comparative samples, morphometrics, micro-CT, and how you separate “normal variation” from “new lineage.” It’s rigorous—and surprisingly gripping.

Field context: Ledi-Geraru (Afar, Ethiopia)—a landscape layered with deep history. We talk sediments, dating, and how careful provenance work turns isolated teeth into evolutionary evidence.
