The scary part of it all to me is how normal and admirable it’s all treated, until people find out how it works. Yeah losing a massive amount of weight is “the goal.” But the only ways to do that are to seriously hurt yourself.

When I was early in the throes of an eating disorder people would ask some variant on “what’s your secret?” And like, I was nauseous, anxious, starving, and sick. I could recommend some drugs if they also wanted to be nauseous, anxious, starving, and sick. I don’t recommend it.

But a living member isn’t asking a question that indicates they almost understand something important. A machine has calculated the series of words that will get the most replies.

And why would I answer a question that no one asked?

There’s a fb group I’m in that has ai engagement bait questions that almost make sense. If a living member of the group asked the same questions it would be the jumping off point to a really good conversation between two people searching for understanding of each other and the sport we all play.

One of the greatest things anyone has ever said to me was to explain that when you randomly decide to pick up a rock it’s because the rock has decided it wants to travel. It gives me joy to ponder.
