Delilah's voice sounded a little off. Regardless, Keondra sighed and moved her hand to her mother's jaw, digging her fingers in hard so she couldn't look away. "Words from snakes are worthless, Mother." "I-" "Shut up! You deserve this for even trying to deceive me when I know full well that you wish you'd never given birth to me. Why, if I could, I'd take my time ripping out each bone in your body and watch you struggle." Her grip went slack, and her voice was quiet the next time she spoke. "The least you could've done is lie to me as well as you lie to everyone else."

In response, she drew back the string, an arrow of magic appearing in her hand, and released, piercing the beast through one eye. The blood and its shriek of pain confirmed the hit. Keondra grinned and jumped on her leopard. "After it! With its vision impaired, we can follow it." The spirit animal jumped off the cliff, using the water in the air to run without falling. Already used to being a moving sniper, Keondra shot a few more arrows, aimed at the neck and wings. None missed their mark. She had options from there, her arrows like pins and needles threated through the dragon's coat and flesh. "Is he here?" "No. I talked to him about this, though. He has respected me ever since I spent some time with him and his pack all those years ago, so he agreed to be my starbound partner... only if I pass his trials. I should've guessed he wouldn't give up his freedom so easily." Catherine let a beat pass. "I presume that these 'trials' are different to the ones used to test a vampire heir's suitors." Noah heaved a sigh. "I told him already that I am absolutely not letting him knock me up with who the fuck knows how many pups for only a chance at winning. Apparently, Keo holds the kingdom's record with a litter of twelve. Twelve, Catherine." "Yes, I saw." "You saw?" "Unfortunately." The Prophet responded with a nervous chuckle. "Lady Catherine and I have a long history together." "A history you promised you'd tell me about someday." "Yes, yes, and I will. Now is not the time." Delilah heaved a heavy sigh, though she smiled. "Before you go, I heard that Sophie is actually in the city for a performance. You could drop by to see her if you're not terribly busy." Keondra smirked. "Oh, I know. She should be home soon. Who knows, maybe I'll get a threesome out of this." "I never know if you're joking or not..." "That is part of my charm," she said, with an exaggerated mock bow. "See you later, Mommy. Give me a call if you're in need of some mark relief." With a nod from the leader of her clan, she walked off to a cafe she was familiar with and made a reservation for later that day. The demons had reached the gates of the capital city in Darcelle's home country. As such, being a royal, she was flying above a line of nervous dragons at the beach, shouting instructions and counting bodies-some dragons had multiple heads, head counting had never been reliable. Darc landed on a rock next to her mother. "Everyone's here." "Thank you." Mermaid Queen Nora took a deep breath and called her merfolk troops to attention by slamming the base of her trident on the stone below. "Mages, prepare the spell! Dragons, you must be ready to walk into the water, fear will not help you here!" Darcelle fidgeted with her fingers. "Will it be okay?" Her mother mustered up a small smile and put a hand on her shoulder. "We're just taking preventive measures in case evacuation is the wiser choice. Your father will fend them off, I'm sure."

Her military uniform reminded Darc a little of her father's; a suit in a deep, almost-black purple made up of a fitted jacket and tailored trousers tucked into her boots, both with a dark red trim like the color of pooling blood, silver buttons and epaulets, a belt with a silver-plated buckle to hold a sword she wasn't carrying, and fingerless leather gloves for her claws. The most striking difference might have been the long, flowing coat worn over that, almost hiding the medals on the left side of her chest, with its high collar and silver clasps to keep it closed and the slit going down the middle to accommodate her tail. "Uh." "If you are in need of refreshments, we have a tent nearby." Darc shook her head. "No, no, I was sent here to welcome your new troops, I think?" An hour later, deep in the bowels of the city, Azath lurked in her laboratory. The main room was a well-lit white expanse so as to more easily catch sight of it if even a single drop of liquid hatred escaped containment. Forbidden alchemy had never been pretty, metaphorically or physically. Azath let her eyes glide over the nearest tube rack-now empty-and the three volunteers that shifted uncomfortably in one of the holding cells. The volunteers didn't keep her attention for long; they were useful to test safer enhancements, finalized serums and rituals, but unfortunately, she had to rely on the less willing participants for her other experiments. A young demon screamed, writhing and convulsing on the floor of his cell. Azath struck the metal bars. "Sing, damn it!" The boy could barely hear her under the sound of his own shrieks of pain. "I-I'm not a merman!" "You should be, that's why I wasted my vial of merman blood on you worthless peasant!" She groaned and stepped away from the cell, her volunteers all pretending they hadn't been looking at the display. "That's... odd, at this hour. I'll get it," said Jadeite. The moment she saw who was at the door, she nearly slammed it closed on the spot. "Wait!" Silva called. "I come in peace, I swear! It's past curfew, so I'd appreciate it if you let me in." Begrudgingly, after a nod from her roommate, Jadeite stepped away from the door to let her through. Silva did not sit down, and addressed the merdragon directly. "I just wanted to say, Princess Darcelle, that you shouldn't be surprised if one day Her Grace starts being... extra nice to you. I wanted to let you know it isn't manipulation, it's just that she got bored of teasing you or figured it isn't the best way to get your attention. She's always had this... fascination, with other species." Darcelle raised an eyebrow. "Fascination?" Silva nodded. "Dragons have been a fixation of hers from the very day she discovered they existed. We thought it would pass, as all her other smaller obsessions did, but it didn't. I... don't think she wants to hurt you, if that's worth anything. That was all I wanted to say. Thank you for listening." With neither woman stopping her, Silva left the room. "I was wondering... Are you in any way worried about your girlfriend?" Noah asked, parrying a blow from their son with minimal effort. "Of course I am! I have full confidence in the Dynasty's defenses, but... I don't know the first thing about dragons, merfolk or their kingdom. I am unfamiliar with how sturdy their defenses might be," he admitted. "It makes me feel uneasy now that I'm dating one of them..." That moment of weakness did not go unpunished. Noah disarmed him in a single move, pointing their sword at his throat. "Then you should start by learning more about Darcelle's species and kingdom. I would suggest going to your sister for information." Fynn took his father's hand when offered to help himself up. "Ignoring my sister's plethora of knowledge on the topic that I do not know where she got... Where could I learn about that here?" "The palace library. There is an entire wing dedicated to other nations and species of our world, and another about the Seven Realms of Fildegard," his father replied as if it were the most obvious thing in the world. "It's nothing compared to Moscow's Great Library, but it's probably the fourth most decent in the world."
