I am a huge Douglas Sirk fan. Imitation of Life is one of my all time favorites. Had the pleasure of seeing a screening at LACMA years ago with Juanita Moore speaking after and then more recently at the American Cinemateque with Susan Kohner interviewed after.

I use this scene in class to illustrate the subjective use of sound. Through the use of perspective and a selective choice of what the audience hears, suspense increases. The audience like Brody grows increasingly anxious through the use of everyday beach ambience and conversations.
