This is a wonderful moment of preparation of the upcoming EIDA workshop. I am most grateful for this support, and look very much forward to see the instruments in action! (Even if, as a consequence, we figure out that we got it all wrong with our reconstruction of this arcane instrument…)

It is a Saturday and what better activity than building planicelia together with @sgessner.bsky.social and Florence Somer in preparation for Celestial Scripts on Monday!

Thank you Veronica for presenting us these fascinating vistas from the amazing Tartaglia. Avery relevant author in the context— read by so many all over Europe (including Pedro Nunes, mathematician and royal cosmographer in Portugal).

Yes. The regulating mechanism (verge and foliot) was replaced in most 15th and century clocks. It’s a tragedy for the clock historians as so much of the historical evidence has been destroyed through the ‘modern improvement’ by a pendulum.
I remember this happened to the planetary clocks…

Even more so, to help shape this shared journey: creating spaces for conversations between people and between diagrams from historical manuscripts and prints—in Chinese, Arabic, Persian, Hebrew, Greek, Latin, and various vernacular traditions.

Just wrapped up the 2025 EIDA conference—once again, an incredibly productive and inspiring gathering. Held in the historic building of the Observatoire de Paris, it was a true pleasure to listen to and exchange ideas with so many sharp and generous scholars—both in person and online.

On the way to Paris for a hybrid seminar at the Observatoire on Tuesday. I'm speaking on medieval Latin instruments: "Early astronomy in context: the view from the museum” and Samuel Gessner will then tackle a troublesome trepidation sphere. Times and abstracts at syrte.obspm.fr/spip/science...
