JAMES PARKHOUSE, Legends in the Landscape: the revenge of Weland in Southern English Toponymy [8k + images] English The legendary smith Weland features prominently in heroic literature and iconography from early medieval England. Wayland’s Smithy, a neolithic monument in Oxfordshire, England, has been named after him since at least the mid-tenth century, and it has been argued that further landmarks in the vicinity of Wayland’s Smithy were named for Weland’s legendary relatives, but these suggestions have not met with widespread acceptance. This article offers fresh consideration of the evidence of the early medieval charters, arguing that the context of their creation and subsequent copying renders the corruption of heroic-legendary names highly probable. It additionally posits the presence of another related place name in the vicinity of Wayland’s Smithy, and discusses two other areas in southern England in which names related to the legend co-occur in local toponymy. These findings corroborate evidence for the early currency of the Weland legend in England, and highlight the enduring cultural significance of Germanic heroic legend in shaping early medieval English identity and its ties to the landscape. Wayland's Smithy, eine neolithische Grabstätte in Oxfordshire, England, ist seit mindestens der Mitte des 10.
