how to explain to dnd party that if you're going to have an "off game" set up (for when players can't make the primary) that it needs to be lower effort to run than the primary, and that that might necessitate switching systems

I finally finished this project btw. once I've done up a presentable set of tables I'll be posting them (both here and on my tumblr)
it probably says something that the instant I'm annoyed with something 5e does I go and resurrect some complicated system from an older edition but I don't want to examine that
(yes I'm reconstructing the old type-based magic items tables because I hate 5e's mishmash don't look at me)
