There’s a book that was released in 2024 about Senator Mathias (Mathias of Maryland Remembering a Lincoln Republican in the Senate).

There used to be 3 branches or wings to the Republican Party (conservative, moderate, and liberal). Reagan was definitely a conservative. John Heinz was a moderate. Clifford Case was a liberal. Ford would have been between Reagan and Heinz. Rockefeller would have been between Heinz and Case.

Mathias was an amazing Senator. I wish there were Republicans like him in Congress today.

I have a difficult time believing Justice Ginsburg could only find one qualified African American to clerk for her in the 2000’s. At the time she was on the bench there were only 2 Democrats on the bench (she was 1 of them)and 2 liberal Republicans.

Further the Supreme Court during the 1950’s and 1960’s was full moderate and liberal Republicans and liberal Democrats. So there would have been a number of Justices African Americans applying could get a clerk ship with including Thurgood Marshall, the first African American Supreme Court Justice.

An important difference is that Chief Justice Warren was on the bench in the 1950’s and 1960’s. During that time period Justices were allowed fewer law clerks also there were likely fewer African-Americans applying to become law clerks as there were fewer African Americans attending law school.

The point of the law was to provide health care not to discriminate against women. Ronald Reagan’s disagreement with the law was likely less about it discriminating against pregnant women and more about being an “expensive government program”.

Earl Warren later regretted having a part in the internment of Japanese Americans. His whole time on the Supreme Court was likely trying to make up for it. My understanding is that Eleanor Roosevelt was the only person who had the courage to spoke out against it.

Justice Stewart also often narrated what was happening in the films to Justice Harlan as well.

Burger and Blackmun were best friends in the beginning but eventually Burger did have a beef with Blackmun. I don’t think Burger ever got to know Justice Frankfurter.

Before Chief Justice Warren Earl Burger, there was a Justice Felix Frankfurter.

She didn’t campaign to the base. She campaigned to a centrist electorate. Unfortunately the electorate this election cycle wasn’t centrist like 2000 or 2004 or even 2016. It was a right wing electorate. I think it would have been difficult for any Democrat to win the presidency.

He won the popular vote by less than 2%. That doesn’t qualify as “overwhelming”. In 2016 he didn’t even win the popular vote.

These guys do disagree with Trump on policy as well. You might want to take a look at their ads.
