And that's not exclusively "monetization". Providing a service and charging for it is fine! It's the pivot to the mass monetization via data and advertising spurred by the demand for endless growth.

The problem with social media isn't social media itself, like so much else, the problems are the perverse incentives we put in place that are perpindicular to the incentives that cause flourishing.

…which is fine as far as I’m concerned, but the “we have to develop a massively extractive business model that must grow exponentially”, which lays the ultimate blame at the feet of late stage capitalism (QUELLE SURPRISE!).

If we’re counting the forums as social media, then I met a lot of good friends that way, and I know a bunch of married couples that met there, soooooo.

Social media’s problems are largely traceable to the monetization incentives. Not just the “I’m going to provide a good service” monetization…

I lived in Saudi back in the 80s as a kid and while it was certainly repressive, it felt like the royals were acquiescing (albeit slowly) to the need to cater to Western sensibilities and tone down the theocracy a bit.

Now it feels like they know they have an ally and can go HAM.
