🚨 How does physician altruism shape ties to the pharma industry? 🚨

@basucally.bsky.social, Jing (jingliuw.wixsite.com/mysite) & I link experimental and admin data to show that less altruistic physicians receive higher industry payments and respond more to financial incentives in prescribing:

2️⃣ Less altruistic physicians (and only them!) also prescribe more of a paid, more expensive brand-name drug, after the payment.
Event studies of prescribing of a paid drug after the initial payment for that drug, showing that prescriptions only increase for non-altruistic but not for altruistic physicians.

Two highlights:

1️⃣ Less altruistic physicians receive 2,184 USD more in annual industry payments: 254% higher than their altruistic peers.
Histogram showing that altruistic physicians typically receive lower-valued payments, while the share of high payments is higher for non-altruistic physicians
