After it stewed about my subconscious for years, my brain finally put it together! This scene from S03E2 (aired 2000) of Sex and the City has a mural in an Indian restaurant which was enlarged from an illustration by the Telugu artist Bapu! An interesting choice by the art dept!

If you’re looking for a super cosy and heartwarming watch, much like a bowl of porridge, then The Golden Spurtle is screening widely! Took a chance and watched it at the town indie cinema, and came away feeling warm and gushy. Perfect for autumn!

Ooof tonight’s Pujo Pandal in NL really was lovely! Closest in atmosphere to the ones in India. With decent space to walk around, introvert a bit and jump back into the melee when ready to. Could do with a lot more food stalls though!

Mandatory Pujo 2025 photo!

Been tracking Sabr Bonda ever since Jim Sarbh mentioned in an interview at the start of the year, that he had co-produced it. Caught a screening in AMS today. A beautiful portrait of queer love set in rural Maharashtra, with an absolutely rooted story and gaze. Screening globally, please watch!

Watched a very sweet video of a family offering an Onam fruit sadya to birds, and they had grey hornbills visit the table!

Reminded me of Zika the Wreathed Hornbill of Mizoram that Nimesh Ved had reported on to the wider birding community in India. 1/2

After having shamelessly slept through a 4K restoration of Ran (thanks to a long train journey and food coma), managed to finally make Yojimbo my first Kurosawa. :D

A crossover film I would happily watch! :)

Ants are such wonderful creatures and always such a joy to observe. Your post reminded me of something I wrote on ants on a whim ages ago, from a pre-monsoon week in Delhi! :)

Such a warm hug of a book! ❤️

Has anyone done an appreciation post for the Hindi cinema retro type inspiration for Mamdani’s campaign? :) I love the bold colour choices breaking traditional choices. The visual campaign has been built with strong brand recall. The design should be spoken about for ages to come.

Was felled by this exchange between Marjane and her father rewatching a 4K restoration of Persepolis on the big screen after 15 long years.

“Can I come back?”
“Yes of course!”
“Promise me you won’t ask any questions?”
“We won’t.”

Tried a Mortadella Bufala Mozzarella Panino from here on a whim, and I think I’m a finally a convert to the religion of Italian food.

The doctor prescribed Majid Majidi on big screen yesterday, so I promptly went to the Cinepharma. 🥰

Took a quick bus trip down to Nuenen, the town where Van Gogh came into his element and began his painting career. 141 years down, the church where his father preached continues to stand solemn and strong amidst a copse of trees. Gogh painted it for his mother who was bedridden for a while.

Missing the summer blooms of India today. Dizzying and stifling heat, harsh glare broken by bright oranges, reds, coppers, yellows. My most cherished description from my younger self of Dilli summer is, “Were the Gulmohar to be a bride, the Amaltas must be her Kaleera.”

After hearing about M.Hulot and Jacques Tati forever, I finally got the chance to watch three films of the quartet. My, what a treat!

A’ite folks, I’ve finally succeeded in pulling off my favourite of the Bengali sweet canon: the Nolen Gurer Payesh! Curdling milk with patali usually was my fate previously, but the syrup (which an acquaintance brought for me from Kolkata) worked far better. 😍

A while ago my spouse came home with a box of minced chicken, craving kababs. With little confidence in our skill, we started off once we found a simple recipe. Despite the chicken releasing massive amounts of water in the frying pan, and some jugaad, these turned out delish and hit the spot. 😍

Felt a tad “kutthe ki zindagi,” today after making a huge detour thanks to increasingly unreliable NS trains and a breakdown. But boy, was the painfully long journey involving multiple train interchanges worth it! Guan Hu’s Black Dog at the CinemAsia Festival was simply phenomenal.

For folks based out of the Netherlands who haven’t been yet, the Wereldmuseum Leiden has a portion of the Benin Bronzes in the Dutch collection on display until the 9th of March; after which they’ll be taken down to be finally restituted to Nigeria in a historic agreement.

This has been an excellent week for films on large screen! Skated into the weekend with Motorcycle Diaries! 🫶🏼

Watching Raoul Peck’s Ernest Cole: Lost and Found was a powerful, moving experience. A searing indictment of white supremacy and the lives it continues to shatter. Of oppression, of homelessness, of exiles losing their hearts and lives far from their homes and communities, settled and ripped apart.

But the best and the finest learning for me and my spouse who literally went expecting nothing and with zero prep, besides an idea of getting to try diaspora food, were sweets like Quindim de Coco, a conventual sweet of many (we only knew of pasteis and queijadas), with a fascinating history! :)

The previous night was spent trying out Grilled Tuna with Mashed Sweet Potato, and Bacalhau (Cod) baked with onions, olives, olive oil, on a bed of roast baby potatoes at Santelmo. We also had a brilliant Brazilian lunch (no pictures alas!) of Bobo de Camarao and Moqueca at a place in Baixa-chiado!
