Another stickman, holding a red heart, replies "According to the government's own data just 6% of the immigrant population came to the UK to seek asylum in 2023. The UK is home to approx. 1% of the 43.4million refugees who have been forcibly displaced across the world. The UK ranks 19th in Europe for the number of asylum seekers we take per head of population." One stickman, holding a red question mark, states "Refugees must claim asylum in the first safe country they land in." The other stickman, holding a red heart, replies "The problem with this argument is, there is no such law. Under the rules put in place by the UN Refugee Convention, which the UK became a part of in the 1950's, there is no obligation for asylum seekers to settle in the first safe country they come across. Not only that, UK law supports this exact interpretation of UN rules. This means the asylum seekers can pass through as many safe countries as they want before they make their claim of asylum." One stickman, holding a question mark, asks "Can't they go back where they came from?" Another Stickman, holding a red heart, answers "For so many people, home would be the best place in the world. But if your home no longer exists, or you known you're likely to die if you go back - then home is just not an option anymore. If someone wants to return home, then generally they can. The Home Office 'Assisted Voluntary Return' scheme even pays people to return. Despite this, many still choose to stay in the UK."

Under the 1951 Convention on Refugees, which the UK has signed, anyone has the right to apply for asylum in the UK, and to stay until there is a final decision on their application. Stories about 'illegal' asylum seekers are designed to make you think that they have done something wrong by even applying. The right to claim asylum is protected by international law." People can only claim asylum from inside a country. The UK government does not supply any safe routes to people who have been forced to leave their home country." Another stickman, holding a red heart, replies "Most people seeking asylum are banned from working, and are forced to rely on state asylum support. They generally want to work. Asylum seekers get just £49.18 a week - 30% below the poverty line. They are not allowed to claim other benefits and have no choice over where they are housed. Accommodation is often of a poor standard; people share houses and sometimes rooms with strangers; and maintenance and upkeep is notoriously bad."

Not only is the word SHARe an acronym for Supporting and Helping Asylum seekers and Refugees, but it also sums up our philosophy in wanting to share our lives with whoever we meet, irrespective of where they come from, their story, language, colour, race, faith and gender.
