(4/5) This indicates, if someone self-harms for one reason, they likely engage in restrictive eating, binge eating, and/or purging for the same reasons. If we target the function behind one behavior, we may reduce others simultaneously.

(3/5) Using multidimensional scaling + hierarchical clustering, we mapped how functions cluster across behaviors.
We identified two functional clusters across behaviors:
🔴Social functions grouped tightly across all behaviors
🔵 Automatic functions grouped across most behaviors

(2/5) NSSI, restrictive eating, binging, and purging often co-occur. We examined adolescents’ use of these behaviors for four functions:
Automatic Positive-to feel good
Automatic Negative-to reduce distress
Social Positive-to get support
Social Negative-avoid social demands
