New paper led by @seaprinceaaron.bsky.social in @currentbiology.bsky.social looking at the threats deep sea mining poses for sharks, rays, and chimaeras. We found 30 species are threatened via various pathways including collector impact and plumes at depth and pelagic discharge plumes.
Figure 1: highlighting various pathways through which mining can impact sharks, rays, and chimaeras including collector impact and plumes, and discharge plumes. Figure 2: The diversity of sharks, rays, and chimaeras impacted by deep sea mining operations. Nearly 2/3 of these species are already at an elevated risk of extinction.

The EU’s ban on discards was meant to end one of the most wasteful practices in fishing: throwing unwanted catch back into the sea. Yet, years after it was introduced under the Common Fisheries Policy, countries are failing to enforce it. oceana.ly/470f0FJ

Japanese innovators have developed a plastic designed to combat marine pollution by dissolving completely in seawater within hours.

No toxic residue and transforms into a substance that enriches the soil eliminates harm and actively contributes to the health of the planet.

In Norway, cutting-edge underwater drones are taking on a deadly but often overlooked threat to marine life — ghost fishing netsEquipped with cameras, sonar, and robotic arms, the drones can dive to great depths, locating and removing the nets with remarkable precision.

NSW 2024/25 shark culling season in a nutshell:

- 90% non target species caught
- Only 33% released alive (with no post release mortality data)
- At least 9 confirmed whale strikes (entanglements)
- 106 sharks spotted with drones vs 24 entangled

But sure, shark nets 'work'.

What a tragedy.
An essential part of the ecosystem, not a threat to humans (which doesn't mean they won't nip you if you get in their way but really just interested in fish), and beautiful in their own right.

Lower numbers than thought, and a slow rate of increase may not be enough to buffer against ongoing impacts from fishing, and the rapidly warming waters on the east coast which could alter habitats and prey distribution around sites they aggregate and breed at.

Researchers aerial drone observations of a previously unknown dorsal-fin behaviour in white sharks (𝐶𝑎𝑟𝑐ℎ𝑎𝑟𝑜𝑑𝑜𝑛 𝑐𝑎𝑟𝑐ℎ𝑎𝑟𝑖𝑎𝑠), suggesting might investigate surface objects by rotating their first dorsal fin on its axis towards the object.
