You can also use white vinegar (but I suppose it might have the same risk as salt of affecting surrounding plants or contaminating the soil for a while - don't know).

I would say beyond has a kind of 'past something else' element, like past a barrier or past a point where others have gone. Deeper to me just means in greater depth, but it could be the same hole.
